Album Review

With ‘M. Laakso Vol. 1: The Gothic Tapes’, the Finnish Band KUOLEMANLAAKSO released their third album in August. However, as the name suggests, the record is in fact a solo album of KUOLEMANLAAKSO’s band head M. Laakso. Whereas the previous two albums featured heavy Doom Metal with Finnish lyrics, ‘The Gothic Tapes’ take on a different stylistic approach and draw heavily on Gothic influences, like TIAMAT and the like. In this sense, the attribute to the main band might be somewhat misleading. Nevertheless, a similar dark and at times melancholic mood remains, so that it is not entirely off.

Whereas the preview song ‘Roll the Dice with the Devil’ as well as the harsh ‘No Absolution’ appear as relatively heavy and straight-forward, the opener ‘Children of the Night’ is characterized by Laakso’s cleanly sung and dark vocals. Whereas ‘The World’s Intolerable Pain’ and especially ‘She Guides Me in My Dreams’ are more influenced by oriental melodies, the literal ending ‘My Last Words’ ends on a softer note. In general, the solo album appears as solidly produced and entertaining. Musically well done and with charismatic vocals, the album proves to be entertaining.
