Album Review

Though their debut album was released in 2003, the band around singer and guitarist Mat Devine has started in the late 90s in Chicago, where they released several independent EPs before they got signed to a Major Label. That was only the beginning. Meanwhile they have a fan club in almost every state in the US and without any radio or press promotion, they could gather up to 1000 people to their headliner shows in England and among their biggest fans is no one less than Billy Cogan (Smashing Pumpkins) who labels them as “…the future of Chicago Rock”.

After such premature praise I was wondering if they could live up to all the praise on their already second album ‘Until There’s Nothing Left Of Us’ already released in 2006 in the US, now re-released for the European audience through Roadrunner Records. Well, I wouldn’t label them as the next big thing as the recipe of combining electronic elements with rock music isn’t really new, but after all it’s still a matter of how you fuse those contradicting elements in the right way, so they harmonize with each other. You have to give them credit for finding the right balance. The predominating style is and stays the rock, often with varying tempos and rhythms inside song. Another plus point for the band is surely the very unique voice of singer Mat which is quite nasal and high for a guy. Initially I was thinking of dealing with a female singer (really), yet this voice has something fascinating to it and it covers various emotions. One second it’s rather fragile, the next it’s extremely powerful like in the chorus of ‘Lips like Morphine’ which I found quite impressing. The accosted electronic elements are used rather subtly, an electronic drum loop here or a small string arrangement like in ‘Black Poison Blood’ to accentuate the ambiance of the track.

Like I said before, for me it’s not the next big thing, bit it’s a band that plays a decent mix of electronic and rock, which doesn’t bore you even after many listens.
