Album Review

NOVEMBWER PROCESS is a German-American project, devoted to the lovely sounds of electronic music. The group attracted the attention for the first time in 2004, when they released their critically-acclaimed debut album ‘Newspeak’ and three years of intense work later the successor going by the name of ‘Deafinition’ saw the light of day in November 2007 on American label Vendetta Music.

The first track of ‘Deafinition’ is a lovely short intro, serving as gate into the melodic world of NOVEMBER PROCESS but it’s also a transition to the first ‘Genuine’ track on the album ‘Antiharmony’ and if you noticed the straight sequencer line in the intro you c presumably guess where the journey leads us to and indeed ‘Antiharmony’ is a straight dance track with a minimal drum arrangement and melodic lines that instantly crate a melancholic mood and if you’re wondering how the title of the track came about, this might come from the deep bass element , used as a contrasting element to the melodies and appears a bit strange at first listen. ‘Men in Grey’ is a true hymn and it makes that crystal clear with the first lines sung by Chuck’s charismatic voice, supported by heart rendering piano lines. One gets tempted to sing along ‘Define Friend’ is, though being somewhat straight, not particularly aiming for the dance floors. Its strengths lie in the use of more organic and precisely worked-out rhythm patterns to fuse it with foggy synth layers and keys with Chuck’s emotional chant on top. ’Deafening’ shows the variety of that project by introducing a harsher Industrial track to the album. The drum sounds appear cold and repellent it does remind of Industrial sometimes. ON the other side are the alternating strings and synth chorals who stand in sharp contrast to these elements.

If you’re a big fan of piano driven balladry tracks like me then you’ll surely take ‘Cold War’ into your heart. The gentle beats are taking the back seat as the piano and the emotive vocals fully fill your mind and you’ll forget everything around and sink into the depths of melancholy. If you’re not into those kinds of songs and want something harder, then the next one is your track. ‘Speak The Ending’ begins with some well-dozed beat attacks which subsequently emerge in a danceable rhythm that suits all your needs. But NOVEMBER PROCESS wouldn’t be NOVEMBER PROCESS if they would left out the melody. Even more than ‘Speak the Ending’, the following ‘Go with me’ will conquer the hearts and minds of all dance freaks at a blow. You really have to praise the guys for this track, because they didn’t just put up a fast dance beat, they enriched it with much detail, in working with glitches, playing a bit with the vocals etc. The real surprise comes with the last track. I was wondering the whole time why there was a guitar player mentioned in the line-up, now he’s finally deployed and ‘Lead the Way’ becomes a forward pushing melange of Rocking riffs, acoustic parts and electronics. I’m not even sure if the drums are electronic or not to be honest. I’d like to hear more of experiments on a hopefully upcoming third album.

For me this album is a wonderful mixture of different styles of electronic music with a big surprise at the end. They don’t re-invent the wheel but they breathe some needed fresh air into the genre, that’s for sure.
