Album Review

The German four-piece first appearance on the musical scenery was with their first Split-EP together with LES FLEURS DU MAL. It should take them two years to release the debut ‘Dio, Dio, Dio’ in 1992, followed by many tours all over Europe, the addition of a second guitarist to the line-up another output ‘The Crypt’ (1993). All in all, the band released 4 albums and a couple of EP’s. Since the last album ‘Antonomasia’ from 2005, it’s silent around the band except for some live appearances. With ‘Un Monde Dove…’ a collection of their most notable songs came out recently…

The songs on this release all originate from different periods of the band’s history and in order to give them a cohesive sound they’ve all been re-mastered. Well, you can’t make them sound like they’ve been recorded today, but the sound is quite good for partly 20 years old recordings like the first track ‘Amore, Federe, Speranza’, a classic as I learned, beginning with a church choral to move on with pushing bass lines, guitars and the trademark vocals of singer Fulvio Tori, his moaning and stammering penetrates the songs like the well-known golden threat. I should mention that all vocals are exclusively sung in Italian language due to the singer’s roots. The chant is something you have to get used to first; often it’s rather recitative chant. But now let’s move on to another song that deserves to be mentioned here, called ‘Paura’, rather short but don’t underestimate tits power. The pushing drums, razor-sharp will drive you to ecstasy. Next song I simply titled ‘Madre’ and is the first one to appear on this compilation with wide synth layers embedded into the sound, adding to the pleading guitar work  holding back behind the fragile, suffering vocals, broken by a short choral intermezzo, which is exactly with what the next song ‘Trivialta’ starts with. The band obviously has a soft spot for this kind of samples. After about a minute the song really start which pits not so much on speed but on the creation of much atmosphere in which they succeed more than well on this track.

There are two parts of ‘Visione’ on the collection both of which I think are good songs but do prefer the first one, moving through different moods and suddenly changing its rhythm and tempo in the middle of the song. ‘Tenebre’, the darkness starts with odd sounds seemingly coming right out of hell’s mouth, before a creepy voices ascends of the emerging guitars soon to be followed by the fast drums. Fulvio’s vocals always sound like suffering, but I think here he caps it all. Impressing! The last track on the compilation ‘Cacerazzione = Morte’ is a rarity only to be found on the ‘The New Face Of Apollyon’ compilation from 1997 and what can you say. It’s another cool track relying on very heavy drumming.

The loyal fans certainly are still hoping for a new album, but even they might find some long sought songs to add to their collection. All the others will find an overview of the work of a very unique band they should check out if they’re into Goth Rock “American Style”.
