Introduction

With their first live DVD, the British band “The Mission” presents an extensive documentation. The double pack tells the varied career of the singer, guitarist and founder of “The Mission” - Wayne Hussey. The German television “WDR - Rockpalast” recorded a concert of “The Mission” in the Cologne Club Limelight on April 13th 2004 and at first the record company of the band, SPV, wanted to produce only a live DVD. But band leader Wayne Hussey pressed for a double DVD with additional features. So "Lighting The Candles" draws a multifaceted picture of the band and its history. In a long interview Hussey tells about the ups and downs and the changes within the band line-up which started with the twice repeated exit of founder member Craig Adams - like Hussey a former member of “The Sisters of Mercy”. The engagement and the obvious enthusiasm with which Hussey was designing the double DVD, lets himself be seen also with charming ideas – like his personal audio comments to a half-hour photo show. He collected a lot of pictorial material for the DVD from 20 years of “The Mission”, classical clips, photos etc. Performing with a lot of energy the band proves, in the concert recorded in Cologne, that “The Mission” isn't a group of yesterday. The current band presents both new songs and classics like “Crystal Ocean”, “Evangeline” and “Wasteland”.

Review DVD 1 – The Concert

1. Intro: Deep Still Water
Intro building up slowly, best sound to start the concert.

2. Crystal Ocean

The song of 1986 opens a row of classics by “The Mission”. With that song, every one knows why old bands like “The Mission” or “Fields Of The Nephilim” cannot be replaced by new bands.

3. Evageline

The comeback single from the year 2001, very powerfull. It rocks.

4. Hymn (For America)
“Hymn..” of the 2nd album “Children” is marked by distorted guitars and with a sound almost like a hard rock song. You hear that this song was produced together with the hard rock producer Bruce Fairbain 16 years ago.

5. (SlaveTo) Lust

The 2nd song from the comeback CD “AurA”.

6. Garden Of Delight

This classical song shows which influence “The Mission” had on the music scene in the 80’s. A lot of feelings & emotions, sensible vocals, guitars and drums full of pressure.

7. Severina
One of my favorite songs. What can I say. Great!

8. Breathe Me In
This is a new song and joins the classics quite well. It´s a small, quiet and sensible song and it could become a “Mission” classic.

9. Butterfly On A Wheel

This is one of the alltime classic live smasher, another quit and slow song.

10. Belief

Further song of the “Carved In Sand” album follows directly in the connection. The whole audience sings very beautifully in the middle of the song. You hear and see that everyone had fun this evening.

11. Sacrilege

After the quiet songs, the band rocks again. A great “Mission“ rock song.

12. Wasteland

“Wasteland“ always and again and again is an absolute live experience, even this almost 8 minutes long version. The frenetic reactions within the audience prove that. A divine piece.

13. Daddy’s Going To Heaven Now
The only song from the Blue/Neverland phase. It is a beautiful song, but not the best one.

14. Like A Child Again

Mr. Hussey returned lonesome to the stage, armed with an acoustics guitar only. This song points out which charisma Wayne Hussey has on stage and you can imagine how exciting his solo concerts are. I can recommend to everyone not to miss such a concert.

15. Beyond The Pale

The rest of the mission team also joined the finale of the show and for the last four songs they rock again.

16. Serpent’s Kiss

The first song which was published by “The Mission” and it keeps its charm also after 18 years. A great song and a great performance.

17. Deliverance

Probably the biggest “The Mission” hit which was celebrated by all persons in the venue - by the band with charming playing and by the audience with its frenetic singing.

18. Tower Of Strength
It was a great surprise that “Deliverance” wasn´t the last song of this excellent concert. It was “Tower Of Strenght” in a magnificent almost 10 minutes long version to comple a very good concert.
