Album Review

Sascha Konietzko and his fellowship haven’t been lazy ever since their last album ‘Tohuvabohu’ came out in 2007. In 2008, they launched the KMFDM 24/7 series on the occasion of KMFDM’s 24th anniversary in which a new limited 7” Vinyl single with songs off the original singles and special album cuts is released every month culminating on 1st February 2010 with a new exclusive single while simultaneously working on the new album ‘Blitz’ which is now ready to invade your homes on 27th March 2009.

The first track not only is the album opener this time but with its title, represented by a symbol is directly connected to the artwork and a message. The track itself is kicking off with a speech sample and hi-hat migrating into a straight, rough, and minimalist crafted rhythm floating under the raw, distorted vocals of mastermind Sascha Konietzko but it’s virtually exploding in the chorus. With ‘Davai’, KMFDM add Russian to their list of languages. It’s pumping ahead with a more eclectic rhythm that gives off energy in constant dozes As a consequence thereof it’s most likely to work great on the dancing circuit. ‘Potz Blitz’, a German-tongued more down-tempo track could probably cut metal into pieces with its sharp-edged guitar riffs and it’s, in parts, dim sound collages are a feast for fans of intense and dense atmospheres.

‘People of the Lie’ is all dedicated to the industrial, opening with heavily mutilated patterns and keeps a mechanic sound throughout its nearly 5 minutes. Lucia is the leading voice of this song and only occasionally Sascha pops in to do some lines together with her. ‘Being Boiled’ is a neat cover version of THE HUMAN LEAGUE’S original firstly issued in 1978. Aside from the distinct sounds you can clearly assign to KMFDM’S work like the pithy guitar riffs, the melodies seem to have transcended directly from the 80s into the present. ‘Bitches’ is a very special one as it is surprising with a few very soft accents in the form of occasional wide layers and acoustic guitar spots as well just to overrun you with the combined powers of riffs and the racing beat.

Well, what shall I say it’s KMFDM you can still hear that. But also I think ‘Blitz’ is the most diverse KMFDM album to date which shouldn’t be missed out in any Industrial / Rock collection and don’t you as well think that the idea with the Russian track is damn cool?
