Album Review

The American pop band formed in 2006 after eventual members Trace Cyrus and Mason Musso were introduced to each other by their mothers at the set of very popular series Hannah Montana starring Trace’s sister Miley and Mason’s brother Mitchell. Bassist and drummer completed the line-up eventually and later that same year the band already signed a record deal. Their self-titled debut studio album which sees its release in Germany next week already came out overseas in 2007 including ‘Shake it’ which grabbed the band a significant amount of commercial exposure, peaking in the top-ten of three US charts.

But now enough of history repeating and let’s see or better hear in this case if the great buzz around this band really is justified. 'Seventeen Forever' opens with sugar sweet synth melodies and sequences and later builds unto a catchy pop hymn for the teenagers to sing along to wildly. The follow-up ‘Control’ starts with reversed, chiming melodies and after a short length of time light retro electronic drums and guitars appear pushing the song forward. I guess all the young girls will declare ‘Kelsey’ one of their favourites with such lyrics “I’ll swim the ocean for you.” and “You’re all I ever wanted…” Way too much cheese for me! Now the word is ‘Shake It’ and I admit that it’s probably working extremely good in the live circuit animating all the girls in front of the stage to shake their limbs and hips and whatnot but aside from that I can’t see why the song is so popular everywhere. It’s plain and simple teen pop but maybe it’s as well due to me being too old already to like it. Whatever, the album does continue to string together one catchy electronic pop-rocking tune after the other combined with lyrics about being young, in love etc. and if that’s exactly on par with your taste then you should have a listen. Personally I can’t get much out of that music for me.
