In 2004, the German songwriter Sebastian Lee Philipp and the French singer, songwriter and actress Valerie Renay formed NOBLESSE OBLIGE in London. Two years later, they released their debut album `Privilege Entails Responsibility´ that came up as a somehow weird but inspired mixture of Industrial, Electronica, Chanson, Punk and acoustic Pop. Thus, the formation surprised the scene due to an enormous stylistic variety and provoking multilingual lyrics. Meanwhile, NOBLESSE OBLIGE released its second long-player `In Exile´ in 2008. As the debut recording had only been available in the UK and was out of stock, the duo decided to provide a re-release with some extras: All in all, it contains 22 tracks including two cover versions of `When I was young´ (ERIC BURDON) and `Ouragan irresistible´ (STEPHANIE DE MONACO), and eight remixes. The latter ones were contributed by artists such as MONA MUR, EN ESCH and LAURENT HO. Therefore, this re-release might enhance the merchandise appeal with regard to fans and collectors.
The most distinctive album’s feature lies in originality and courage to combine diverse styles, regardless of genres or conventions. For example, the monotonous, Post Punk-like `Daddy (Don’t touch me)´ follows up the Industrial Rock piece `Bite back´ opposed to the minimalistic `Was keine Zeit zerstört´ that is a dark acoustic song with spoken lyrics and a pinch of Folk. Every now and then, the production’s statement of being different appears to me way too excessive and intended, and certainly it is everything but mind candy. Thus, `Privilege Entails Responsibility Re-Release´ is something for those who love demanding and multi-layered stuff.
