Album Review

Autumn is here and has brought cooler days, a sense of melancholia and an increased need for spending cosy evenings. If you look for a fitting score, you will probably find pleasure in ONIRIC´s new long-player `Cabaret Syndrome´. Founded in 2005 by Carlo De Filippo and GianVigo, the Italian project is going to release its first full-length album on 16th October. Providing a soundscape that mostly bases on acoustic instruments such as piano, guitar, violin and tambourine, the recording invokes the nostalgic charm of past times. Tracks like `Blessing´ and `L´autre´ made me think of dusty attics full of atmosphere and mysterious chests containing antique souvenirs that still radiate a certain kind of splendour.

Unfortunately, those sad and at the same time romantic songs are pretty much alike. At the beginning, I regarded the old-fashioned instruments in combination with sonorous male singing and fragile female vocals as a nice and inspiring invitation to indulge in daydreams! However, I soon got used to that musical style and I sometimes wondered whether I had heard a composition before. Nevertheless, `Cabaret Syndrome´ is well-suited for moments when you just want to wrap your blanket around you to escape from a grey and misty day for about an hour.
