Album Review

American electronic industrial band MY LIFE WITH THE THRILL KILL KULT´s most recent recording `Death Threat´ was released in April 2009 and is the meanwhile 13th album since the formation has been formed in the fall of 1987 by Groovie Mann and Buzz McCoy. Due to their common preferences such as horror B-movies and other trashy film stuff, they decided to name themselves MY LIFE WITH THE THRILL KILL KULT. They soon signed at Chicago’s famous and renowned label Wax Trax Records which was also home to bands like MINISTRY, FRONT 242 and KMFDM. In 1988, they introduced their first full-length album entitled with `I See Good Spirits and I See Bad Spirits´. The project’s style can be regarded as electronic club music with heavy beats and elements of disco and funk as well, though there are also some heavy metal influences.

The martial title shouldn’t have a deterring effect on inexperienced listeners as the 10 tracks are pretty interesting and versatile pieces frankly combining various genres regardless of the consequences. Considering the certainly freaky lyrics, it is obvious that the formation has been inspired by strange movies you can usually watch around midnight. However, the somehow weird contents fit well to the raspy exalted vocals and the changing soundscapes. For example, `Who r u now?´ sounds like a guitar-driven homage to glam rock artists such as T-REX or THE SWEET while the opener `Witchpunkrockstar´ features rather experimental synth sounds connected to several samples of sirens and rattling drums. According to the song’s title, `The Ultimate Nude´ radiates a sultry charm that reminded me of porn movie soundtracks. Every now and then, I thought I might have heard an affinity to 1970s music. Thus, `Bottoms up´ evokes memories of JIMI HENDRIX because of a particularly celebrated guitar riff drawing through the entire track. All in all, you will get a well-entertaining and colourful album flirting with different musical styles and a generous pinch of trash.
