Album Review

The three-piece coming from Hamburg’s red light district St. Pauli recently provided its first double live album featuring 22 songs that had been recorded while being on tour in 2008. If you have ever experienced vocalist Chris Laut, Dennis Henning (guitar) and Stefan Lehmann (drums) live on stage, you will know that this package is able to blow your ears away. This can be explained due to the powerful Hard Rock melodies combined with German lyrics displaying a lot of local colour and dealing with unmistakably male issues such as girls, motor bikes, fast cars and Rock’n’Roll over and over again. Formed in 1994, the masters of so-called “Full Throttle Rock” have released the three studio albums `Schmutzige Liebe´ (2003), `Rock’n’Roll Sexgott´ (2005) and `Mit Vollgas und Blaulicht´ (2007) so far. Looking back on 15 years of playing together, it was high time for delivering an extensive live album.

For those who haven’t heard about the North German formation: OHRENFEINDT sounds like a Hamburg mix of AC/DC and ROSE TATTOO which means dominant guitar parts and shrill vocals. Fortunately, the album can capture the prevailing live atmosphere and even the partly ribald and well-entertaining jokes Chris Laut is known for when the band is on stage. Though the authentic lyrics are in simple language, they don’t lack wit and perspicacity. Besides many driving and forceful songs such as `Energie´, `Zum Rocken geboren´, `Ohrenfeindt´ and `Harley-Luja´, you can also find melancholic and reflective stuff like `Es wird Tag auf St. Pauli´. However, sawing lead vocals and skilful guitar riffs prevent sentimentality and still guarantee robust arrangements inspiring tough bikers and intrepid females as well.
