Album Review

It's been since Late 2008 that the self proclaimed Metal / Folk / Celtic band, KIVIMETSÄN DRUIDI, released their debut album 'Shadowheart'. However, that does not mean that the Finnish metallers have not kept themselves busy in the meantime! Their latest album ‘Betrayal, Justice, Revenge’ will be released spring of this year, demanding to be their “most diverse and mature album to date” by the band. After completely dissecting this album through the fantasy-driven artwork, gorgeous production, and symphonic composition, I must say that they have proven themselves once more.

I entered the first song on the album feeling unsure of what to expect. The melancholic piano took me completely off guard, after expecting a degree of something heavier. After a few moments, electric guitar accompanies the piano, and extended into something truly enchanting… and for a moment, I completely forgot that I was listening to the same band that produced songs like ‘Blacksmith’ and ‘The Tyrant’, both with that undeniable organic feel of their roots combined with the metal ambiance cast by the blast beats, guttural male vocals, and epic-sounding bass and guitar. Folk Metal has extended from a degree of black metal to a complete genre of its own over the years, and that wave of music combined with the Soprano opera-influenced vocals of Leeni-Maria has taken the world by storm.

With songs on the new album with titles as ‘Chant of The Winged One’ and ‘Seawitch and the Sorcerer’, you gain a pretty good perspective of the albums potential severity. And it’s within those songs, much like others on the album, that remind you of how they were: The adorable little Finnish band, years ago, with hardly a demo in their hands, touring with fellow-Finnish band, KORPIKLAANI. Since then, it only takes you a song or two to gauge how much they have ripened over the years, and how much more they still have to come. I personally look forward to their future releases, and all they have ahead of them. KIVIMETSÄN DRUIDI’s album ‘Betrayal, Justice, Revenge’ can be purchased through Century Media on April 23rd of this year.
