Album Review

KASHMIR started in 1991 with the name NIRVANA and had to change their name eventually due to the growing popularity of that other band with the same name ;) The Danish band which has come to great recognition with albums such as 'The Good Life' from 1999 and the platinum-certified 'Zitilites' from 2003 is returning in 2010 with their sixth album 'Trespassers'.

It is like the darkly orange beams of sunlight, coming through the leave roof on a passing summer's evening once the album sets off to bring you 'Mouthful of Wasps'. It's also that kind of aural scenery that awakes wistful feelings in the hearts of listeners, so their minds will fully merge with the track's mood created by the interaction of the stripped down drum fundament with the sparkling strokes of the guitar and the crystalline keys, supporting Kasper's vocals on their journey. The 'Intruder' sneaks into our audible spectrum quietly with a rather restrained electronic beat, running unencumbered under plaintive melodies, growing in thickness and urgency as suddenly the rhythm shifts towards the acoustic field and gives off a bit more of a driving pace! Majestically, the 'Mantaray' drifts along beneath the waves, just as if it was flying through the sea. You're instinctively feeling remembered of such sceneries of documentary movies when the track gently kicks in with percussions, enveloped in a muffling coat and swirled around by fluid atmospheres.

Afterwards, the 'Pallas Athena' opens its gates to let loose on your soul touching piano movements, wrapped up in a haze of synthetic melancholy and robotic vocals. As a special guest we can welcome the Theremin, clocking in close to the end. 'Danger Bear' intimately paints soulful pictures by employing the help of minor piano chords and slowly swelling string orchestration. Acoustics, meandering around rather rocking dark guitars open the last chapter of the album, called 'The Indian (That Dwells In This Chest)'. That is happening short spells before the drums kick off and I'm getting to hear the words sung by Kasper that this time almost make me cry when the piece opens up for the chorus, moving sequentially through worlds of short exhilaration and longer periods of melancholy.

A glamorous little gem of music it is what's been crafted with KASHMIR's new album 'Trespassers'. Never, while listening, I had doubts something wouldn't belong exactly in the location it was placed in but after all it doesn't sound calculated. KASHMIR are definitely masters at what they're doing, that is, celebrating the melancholy without it becoming too much at any point. Well done and highly recommended!
