Album Review

K’S CHOICE is a Belgian band from Antwerp and it was formed in the beginning of the 90´s. The core members of the band are the siblings Sarah Bettens (lead vocals and guitar) and Gert Bettens (guitar keyboard, vocals), they were later joined by Eric Grossman (bass), Thomas Vanelslander (lead guitar), Reinout Swinnen (keys) and Koen Liekens (drums). I took me some time to manage ‘Echo Mountain’ because when I started to listen to it I thought that the first part of this double album was too happy sounding for my taste, but then as I gave it another chance and listened some more to it. I got into the songs and in fact started to like this album more and more.

The first part / record is easier and brighter and the second part/record is darker and in my ears more interesting. ‘Come Live the Life’ starts with a simple and slow intro where Sarah and Gert Bettens voices blend together perfectly only accompanied by a guitar. I like the way the song speeds up and changes into something else. The title song ‘Echo Mountain’ has a playful tone that makes me smile, I like the sound of the guitars and bass in this song and the catchy and easy feeling it creates. ‘Perfect’ is different and a little bit rougher sounding, I like the playful sounding lyrics and the way this song is build with a cool tempo change in the middle.

The second part of the album starts with ‘Say a Prayer’ and this song really took me by surprise, I like the laid back feeling to this one, it’s a slow and moving song where Sarah sings with such feeling that it’s a pure pleasure to simply close your eyes and enjoy it and the strong lyrics. ‘16’ starts with a simple and brilliant sounding guitar; this emotional and dark ballad quickly became a favourite. I really like the way this one sounds, the melancholic feeling it creates with strong and beautiful lyrics. ‘Killing Dragons’ is a special song with interesting music and lyrics. I like the way Sarah’s and Gert’s voices blend together in this cool duet and the unexpected guitar and bass part that gives the song a nice edge.
