Introduction

KORZUS is like the “man in the iron mask” when it comes to Thrash Metal. They started out in the late eighties about the same time as SLAYER did, carrying a similar sound. The thing was they never got the same fan appreciation or exposure that SLAYER did, and in turn, have become somewhat of an underground, underappreciated band. While their story isn’t exactly like the famed “Man in the Iron Mask” tale - partially because neither band is related and is from completely different countries - KORZUS’ music undeniably has some strong ties to SLAYER’s music. KORZUS even did a cover on one of their older demos of the group. Now it’s 2010 and after four studio albums and two live albums mixed with a few EPs, KORZUS is ready to unleash their destructive tendencies once again.

Album Review

Those who are used to KORZUS know to expect a lot of SLAYER inspired thrash with their music so far. ‘Discipline of Hate’ is no different. The guitars’ melodies, the battery assault, and even the screamed vocals… it’s all SLAYER once again. For the most part it sounds like KORZUS did their best to pattern their music after ‘Diabolus in Musica’ and ‘God Hates Us All’ - both SLAYER albums and both considered quite the “sell out” for its catchy sound. And ‘Discipline of Hate’ certainly is catchy. From the opening title track, one can definitely hear the SLAYER influence. Lots of tracks are fast and heavy hitters such as ‘Slavery’ or ‘2012’ which offers plenty of hard riffs mixed with wicked solos and lots of shouting to bring fans back to the good old thrash metal days. The solos are brief, but often extremely melodic at the same time, especially on ‘2012’.

But, KORZUS go to show that they aren’t all about being a SLAYER copy, as lots of their songs hold lots of groove metal influence towards bands such as PANTERA or THROWDOWN. Tracks like ‘Raise Your Soul’ offer a multi vocal chorus and is certainly slower than some of the other tracks on ‘Discipline of Hate’, but instead of sheer speed and aggression, KORZUS seems to go more for catchiness. Other tracks such as ‘Evolution’ have a great drum focus that sounds very FEAR FACTORY inspired from the ‘Demanufacture’ days and ‘Reap What You Sow’ is a very thrash n’ rock inspired track that opts for thick, chugging guitars rather than just extreme riffs and wild solos in between. It is perhaps the most original track that KORZUS has done and doesn’t sound 99% like SLAYER.

Altogether, metal heads who are already fans of KORZUS will probably pick this up regardless. While the SLAYER similarities may get one some fans’ nerves as some may think there can only be ‘one’ SLAYER, KORZUS still knows how to bring the aggressive thrash along with the melody. The music brings forth a lot of great, catchy head banging glory on their latest disc, and while it may not be original, it is still a fun listen regardless of what music fans really love. Definitely worth checking out for anyone who likes speed groove metal or thrash in general.
