Album Review

NUDE formed in 2007 by members spanning several nationalities - their sound is created by combination of Drum & Bass, Breakbeat, Electro-Punk, BigBeat etc. - producing a mix that sounds both dated and modern at the same time, the crossover certainly makes NUDE’s classification a difficult one. As their active goal is seeking the escape from convention they certainly sound less as mainstream than some of the influences they mention like PRODIGY, BASEMENT JAXX, FAITHLESS or CHEMICAL BROTHERS. They have brought several releases out, ‘Blackbox’ in 2008 and Vinyl ‘Club Box One’ which was favoured by many DJ’s across Europe.  ‘Rough, Rugged & Raw’ came out to herald ‘Basic Guerilla Moves’ album, it also contained cover of HEAVEN 17’s ‘Let Me Go’.

The first part shows off the vocals mostly rapping, the main female vocal mixed and sometimes as if pitied against the male one. The sixth song ‘Showtime’ has an eerie beginning which slips into a catchy track far too soon, quite a puzzling as one would have expected to have the creepiness of the start more incorporated or the theme continued but alas, it is not, the result is that it feels a bit of a disjointed track, on the other hand one often feels disorientated listening to this music. However ‘Showtime’ does usher the more experimental side of the album, more singing than rapping also, the quality is less of an assault of the beginning and more of the dreamy, surreal feeling as if being lost in some urban Panoptikum of confusing, fast experiences shown at every turning. ‘Souvenir’ comes with a flavour of German, vocals this time melodic, I had a bit of a sense of déjà vu, as if the song was playing with another song that I’ve heard before but lost from memory. The album finishes with ‘Normalee’ which is a bonus track; its echoing effects are great, industrial and futuristic as much of the album’s components with a touch of Hip hop.

NUDE have worked on something quite interesting here, the disorienting effect is either good or unwelcomed, depending on the listener, but in either case it’s definitely challenging and for that alone I’d recommend it. I can also imagine that the psychedelic undertone will create an edge to the atmosphere in the clubs too; it’s a solid release with many engaging facets and worth of attention.
