Album Review

KOREA, a Swedish quartet, was formed in 2003, released a self titled single and a debut album ‘For The Present Purpose’ followed in 2008. The second LP ‘The Delirium Suite’ has been released at the end of the 2010 and contains their building up on the melodic Rock mixed with Metal elements. Because so much of this genre gets to follow formulaic and homogenous approaches, it’s great to hear this album differs from the average, probably as they get the perfect balance between Rock and Metal and the catchiness that the songs have doesn’t come out as cheesy at all. The music strikes one as sincere, it doesn’t have that the “just another product” sheen manufactured for the “sell it” effect; it has enough uniqueness about it for them to be swept into the uniformity that some other bands get buried under and forgotten in one breath. Also the point that works well with ‘The Delirium Suit’ songs is that they are represented with lyrics that hold some interest and differ in themes.

Having said that I don’t know why they chose to herald the album with the RADIOHEAD cover, their fourth song ‘Street Spirit (Fade Out)’. Don’t take me wrong, the cover is great, but I don’t want to know how well they cover other bands, prior to getting the album I’d have liked to know what represents their own creations - they are strong enough on their own. To mention highlights from this album ‘Prozac Gen.’ I’d pick for the interesting base and riffs, the stop and go effect in the middle of the song, the words of the song. Although all songs are melodic, the vocal never gets tedious and sounds varied enough. The mentioned cover is indeed a wonderful melding of RADIOHEAD’s well known song and their take on it. ‘Exit’ for the well timed inclusion of sampled voice intersecting the song to intensify what they’re conveying. All in all, KOREA is quite a promising band who has brought out a solid and enjoyable album.
