Album Review

‘One Night Of Insurrection’ is actually a DVD released by this band based on their 30 year anniversary together since 1979. The show was a private one performed in their hometown of Grenoble, France. The CD accompanying it is NOT that same show - it is instead another live show entitled ‘Summer Blast in Israel.’ Despite it being a few tracks shorter than the DVD, NIGHTMARE still delivers quality music in a live setting, as fans would expect. The album begins with the crowd being agitated and excited as a symphonic section is played, and then the music kicks off. For those who don’t know, NIGHTMARE is a five piece heavy metal band with power metal influences. Much of the music involves heavy, chugging riffs and melodic solos much in the fashion of DIO and IRON MAIDEN with vocals that can range from high falsettos to low, growling croons that are heavily melodic as well. There are no keyboards and no additional female vocals to create a complex, progressive or gothic atmosphere as many other power metal bands do. NIGHTMARE is simple, and sometimes fans love simple. Or at least the ones at the show do.

The track discography spans across NIGHTMARE’S entire career. It doesn’t include music from ever album, but mostly their earlier works, a few mid era ones, and their last two releases. Fans will probably be most excited to hear tracks like ‘Heretic’, ‘Cosmovision’, the epic ‘Three Miles Island’, and the first track that really put the band on the map - and has been re-recorded on future albums at times - ‘The Watchtower’. All hold a similar musical style; there isn’t really one track on the album that is ultra heavy or one that is extremely soft and acoustic. The quality of the production is somewhat fuzzy, which tends to drown out the vocals, but not too much while keeping up the live feel overall. The band’s interaction with the crowd is always dynamic near the end and beginning of the album, and tracks like ‘Eternal Winter’ feature crowd participation during the song. Compared to their 2000 live release where they also covered lots of songs, ‘One Night…’ is more original and a welcome addition to any fan of NIGHTMARE who hasn’t gotten the chance to see them live and has always wondered what they sound like compared to studio work. Considering how well this sounds compared to a bootleg or a YouTube version, this album is also a good place for fans to look if they want to have  a “best of” by the group at this point because it includes plenty of music that spans across their entire career.
