Album Review

Browsing through the material on the net, KRYPTERIA was mostly being described as ‘Power Metal’ band but this album has a very little of the typical sound of that trend to be categorised as such. Well, to hell with labels, but they can be helpful like for example compass in not spending time walking in circles, looking without finding. They’re closer to the Gothic Metal & Rock with symphonic elements; they’re pretty much playing their own tune anyway. These guys started with some extravagant ideas of musical-like project, but after Ji-In Cho joined them that was it - they were a band fronted by a charismatic female singer.

‘All Beauty Must Die’ begins with rolling thunder of a guitar and slips into a strong introducing song ‘Messiah’ with a memorable refrain, angsty angry feel in slightly menacing riff and the vocal. ‘As I Slowly Bleed’ had me expecting a melodramatic song, it has misleadingly slow start and then the sound hits you again though it’s not harsh song as the first, the vocal slows it down and turns it into an emotive song. I’d have wished for a better clarity of sound, but not all wishes can always be granted. It’s a beautiful song regardless. As I got to the ‘You Killed Me’ there was a thread that stood out, there’s a lot of questioning and searching going on. ‘Eyes Of A Stranger’ starts out with a wonderful piano sound which make it a bit different from the songs before it which begun to sound bit too similar to each other, so the change is welcome.

With its symphonic aspects and also clipped quality to the verses it’s one of the best tracks for me.  ‘Hurt So Bad’ is balladesque, with a great narrative, another beautiful and emotively loaded song.  After that you enter into the bonus area, showcasing some of their earlier tracks which give you a good contrast between their past and present to see their evolving journey. ‘Get The Hell Out Of Here’ made me wish that they had more duets within their new material as well, more contrast between the female and male vocal would have brought more out of it, in my opinion. Altogether this is enjoyable, solid album. One thing that comes through with KRYPTERIA is that they are constantly striving to progress, so the best is yet to come yet.
