Misfits, Juicehead, One Leg Man, Beretta Suicide

American Punk band MISFITS can be counted as the founder of so-called Horror-Punk and had huge influences onto bands like NOFX or PENNYWISE i.e. but also in the Metal scene. Nowadays they’re considered a legend and quite a few came to see them when they stopped at Matrix club in Bochum on their “The Devil’s Rain” tour…

Beretta Suicide

The mission of British BERETTA SUICIDE is “taking rock back from the pop idol, mass produced fake bands that have infested the music scene like an STD.” The band released their eponymous EP in last year’s November. The band consists of four guys, Joey K, Ryan Earl, Noel 'the Face' Horton and Kidd Pert http://www.facebook.com/berettasuicide / http://www.berettasuicide.com

Music & Performance
They were the first of three support bands to get the crowd in tune for the MISFITS. Starting up very early already at 7:20 in front of a small audience, they were playing a high octane cocktail of dry rock rhythms flavoured with punk. Their most remarkable feature however was their rhythmic section. Those rhythmic figures could tear down walls and were much more layered than the average one would be. All three were enjoying themselves a lot. Something you couldn’t say the audience did much at this point except a few lost souls. A solid opening for the night!

One Leg Man

Italian band ONE LEG MAN was brought to life in 2003 by four underground musicians. The band released a first demo around 2007 to critical acclaim. It would be taking a few more years before news of an album surfaced. In 2011, they’d be releasing their debut, entitled ‘The Crack’ on Buil2Kill Records. ONE LEG MAN is Chupacabra (vocals), Low Pressure (bass), Dr. Mastermind (drums) and Chicken Beast (guitar). http://www.facebook.com/onelegmanband / http://www.onelegman.com / http://www.myspace.com/onelegman

Music & Performance
ONE LEG MAN came along following a short rebuilding break. Their approach was quite a different one compared to the previous bands: Being stronger in the vocal department their music proved to be much heavier and darker with a strong metal tinge to it and almost some hardcore influences. The singer’s vocals now and then reminded me of the way Serj Tankian of SYSTEM OF A DOWN performs his vocals, albeit not being as crazy about it. Several times the band tried to get the crowd into action a little but failed with most of them. Later when they were throwing t-shirts off stage, those were the ones eager to grab one. Not bad!

Juicehead

JUICEHEAD formed in 2003, emerging from the ashes of a few other punk bands. In 2007, the band released their widely acclaimed debut album ‘The Devil Made Me Do It’ Ever since the line-up has completed the band toured constantly and build an impressive reputation. Their second album ‘How To Sail A Sinking Ship’ was out in 2011. JUICEHEAD is  Rob Vannice (guitar and vocals), Tommy Kloss (bass) and Mike Garelli (drums). http://www.facebook.com/juicehead / http://juiceheadmusic.com / http://myspace.com/juicehead

Music & Performance
JUICEHEAD were the last “obstacle” to take before the countdown to the main event could finally begin. A quick changeover and Rob Vannice and his band entered the stage to deliver a classic kind of punk rock. While that isn’t necessarily a bad thing there was a severe downside to the music. The rhythm hardly changed. Most of the time the gallop was the means of choice to push a song forwards. After a while I kept wondering how many songs they’d been playing already. While the band rocked as heavy as can be, finally the crowd down here woke up a little. Seemed like this was more up their alley than the other stuff! The catchy vibe of the songs most likely did the rest. The band inarguable did a good show, but for me the lack of diversity regarding song structures weighed too heavy to give it more than an average rating. The biggest change in the set was when a crew member joined them for one of the songs on stage to deliver some additional vocals.

Misfits

The formation of the MISFITS goes way back to 1977. The Name’s derived from a movie of the same title starring Marilyn Monroe and Clark Gable. During the same year they recorded and released the first single ‘Cough / Cool’ and played first shows. Due to various reasons it took until 1982 for the first album ‘Walk among Us’ to be released. Until then, a bunch of EPs had been released. After the album ‘Earth a.D’, the band already disbanded to reunite in 1995 and released 3 other studio albums. The latest one of which is ‘Project 1950’ from 2003! The band how it’s existing today barely has anything in common with the past incarnation except for Jerry Only who’s the only remaining member of the original line-up. A new album with the current line-up was said to be released sometime in 2009, however the album, titled ‘The Devil’s Rain’ wasn’t out until late 2011. MISFITS today consists of Jerry Only (vocals, bass), Dez Cadena (guitar) and Eric "Goat" Arce (drums). http://www.facebook.com/Misfits / http://misfits.com / http://myspace.com/themisfits

First of all: I have never seen the “old” MISFITS. Many say that the band today is not what it was anymore, as well on CD as live. I cannot make any comparison, but only judge about the show I’ve seen, a quite short one btw lasting only 1:15 even though the band played more than 30 songs. You can imagine how short they were and how fast the band played… when JUICEHAD had left the stage and it was prepared for MISFITS, first thing you saw was the amazing drum podium made of “walls” and “skulls” and the backdrop showing the cover of the recent album. In known horror-punk manner, the trio entered the stage wearing horror make-up and the bass and the micro stands were decorated with skulls or skeletons. Show-wise, not much happened since both front men were stuck with their instruments behind the micro stands, not moving away from it. Drummer Eric was mostly covered by thick smoke, so you could not really see him playing. Setlist-wise the first part of the show consisted of songs from the new album only, played in the exactly same order like on CD.

During the evening, nearly the whole album was played. But having in mind the amount of songs being played, there was enough room for older stuff as well, especially that was awaited by the audience obviously having fun. All in all, I was not totally convinced by the show, in the course of a whole concert, it was rather boring.
