Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds & Paul Newsome

THE HIGH FLYING BIRDS are Noel Gallagher's final return to music ever since he split with OASIS back in 2009. Being guest at the Mitsubishi Electric Halle already in October 2012, the older Gallagher brother returned to the venue to present his own songs as well as some OASIS classics. As support, he brought PAUL NEWSOME originating from Manchester/ UK.

Paul Newsome

PAUL NEWSOME is originally from Manchester, England, and living now in Los Angeles, is the founder and songwriter for UK band PROUD MARY. He has written several film’s scores and toured with such artists as THE WHO, DAVID BOWIE, PAUL WELLER, or OASIS to name a few. His band PROUD MARY btw. was the first signing on Noel Gallagher's Sour Mash label and Gallagher produced their first album. This connection might also be the reason why PAUL NEWSOME was now supporting Gallagher on his tour. As solo artist, Newsome released the album ‘Electric and Palms’ in 2015. For his short, not much more than 20 minutes lasting support acoustic appearance during the Gallagher show, Newsome (guitar, vocals) brought two additional musicians with him: Nathan Birkett on guitars and Paul Fuller on drums, or better, on one tom. More was not played during the reduced acoustic set. To be honest, the three guys could not get the audience going, the music was calm. I might say typical Brit Pop, but in stripped down versions. Also the lights were steady and not very interesting. http://www.paulnewsomemusic.com / https://www.facebook.com/paulnewsomemusic

Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds

English musician Noel Gallagher is best known as the former lead guitarist, backing vocalist and principal songwriter of the English rock band OASIS. Departing from OASIS in 2009, he announced he would embark on a solo career. Formed in 2011, NOEL GALLAGHER’S HIGH FLYING BIRDS – his own band after the split – released the self-titled debut album in the same year. It took four years since the debut album to release a follow-up. His second album ‘Chasing Yesterday’ was out end of February 2015 finally and is now promoted by a tour through Europe, including two shows in Germany and later several festival appearances. The band consists of Noel Gallagher (lead vocals, lead guitar), former Oasis session pianist Mike Rowe (keyboards), Tim Smith (guitar), Russell Pritchard (bass) from THE ZUTONS and Jeremy Stacey from THE LEMON TREES (drums). http://www.noelgallagher.com / https://www.facebook.com/noelgallaghermusic

Music & Performance
Mr. Gallagher and his band returned to Germany for only two shows. The show in Düsseldorf was somehow special since it was recorded and broadcasted live in German TV as well as in Radio. Lots of cameras were placed in the security pit and in the hall to capture the show from various angles. Finally at nine, the intro ‘Shoot A Hole Into The Sun’ sounded through the speakers and the band and three additional musicians on trumpet, trombone and saxophone entered the stage. The following set turned out to be a great mix of own pieces and tracks from his former band, starting off right away with the own song ‘Do the Damage’ from the new album, being only included on the bonus disc of the deluxe edition. The fans were excited from the beginning and accompanied the songs with clapping and singing. And something else accompanied the songs too: a great light show with various video projections, might it be little films or even live impressions from the evening. Looked really impressive. Noel himself was in good mood presenting himself talkative and communicating with the audience not only by gestures but also with words – showing him as friendly musician.

After several own song, ‘Fade Away’ was the first OASIS song of the evening wherefore Gallagher grabbed an acoustic guitar. Further on, the set moved between rocking tunes and ballads, between OASIS songs and HIGH FLYING BIRDS songs culminating for the first time with the OASIS song ‘Champagne Supernova’. In such moments, you really wish OASIS back and well, maybe a reunion is not impossible, as Gallagher himself stated already. So let’s hope for it. Now, a handful of more HIGH FLYING BIRDS songs were on the list before the main sent nearly found an and with OASIS’ ‘Digsy's Dinner’. After ‘If I Had a Gun...’, the band left the stage. Loud screams occurred and soon you could people head singing ‘Don't Look Back in Anger’ from OASIS to command the band back who, of course, started the encore with exactly this song. There really is no change in the setlist between cities and so people knew exactly what was up next. Moving on with ‘AKA... What a Life!’, the set ended with another OASIS classic, namely ‘The Masterplan’, marking a really great end of the show when people happily sang along.

Seems also without his former band, Noel Gallagher did anything right, satisfying the audience a lot with his show. No one would look back in anger, I guess!
