introGasteig @DarkNight Festival, Munich, Germany
12th September 2015
Mundtot

A worthwhile finale of the festival season for me became a local metal festival in Munich, called DarkNight. The two day event took place at the Gasteig cultural centre. The location itself seems to be quite interesting even though it’s not so easy to find. As for the festival, it definitely has its moments, presenting a variety of metal genres and subgenres and giving bands, many of which are promising but not so well-known, a chance to show their potential. And I must say that they succeeded. So those who saw shows on the 11th and 12th of September had enough time to head-bang and maybe discover this or that formation, never heard before. Although it will be too hard and long to describe everything, I confine myself to reviewing the set of MUNDTOT, the only band I knew off the whole line-up.

Thus the Munich-based rock project gradually attracts more and more attention and since 2009 the musicians have been writing intricate, though-provoking and at the same time catchy songs. MUNDTOT is Tino (vocals), Andi (guitar, backing vocals) and Cesco (synths). https://www.facebook.com/Mundtot

Music & Performance
No wonder the concert started with a brand-new song entitled ‘Kalter Rauch’ from the band’s third upcoming studio album ‘Wir’. Actually the new still unreleased tracks prevailed so I can only give an overall description of them. Expressive, rich and powerful melodies, sometimes even more powerful than those on the previous albums with catchy choruses, a clear rhythm and I guess meaningful lyrics yet it was hard to comprehend everything on the spot, especially in German. The next piece was ‘Immer schon zu spät’, which was also supposed to be the first single from the album.

Yet the very first composition unexpectedly released became ‘Sonar’, not played that day but even without it the set could be regarded as a sort of the presentation of a new material. Yes, it produced a good impression and all the songs deserve to be listened to more attentively, but anyway it was pleasant to hear something familiar like ‘Zweites Gesicht’ and ‘Schwarz/Weiß’ from the other albums. The final and already rather well-known track ‘Einsamkeit und Zweifel’ made the concert complete. I guess I saw MUNDTOT three times already and despite the seeming simplicity of their show, without any special effects and fancy outfits, it produces a good impression and always creates an imponderable atmosphere, both dark in its own way and inspiring. So in that atmosphere the time flew by incredibly fast and later on the festival got even stronger with the gig of industrial band HERZPARASIT. But that would have been another story.
