Letzte Instanz, Silent Poem

LETZTE INSTANZ in Krefeld, announced as the only show to take place within the Ruhr area on their current tour. That meant a packed house of course and people waiting in the rain a long time to get in to experience a great show.

Silent Poem

The first thing you’d hear from SILENT POEM musically was the ‘crispy coffy’ mini album, dating back to 2002 with mostly English titles, whereas later albums of the German band would mostly hold lyrics in their mother tongue, The band released three more albums after ‘crispy coffy’, but the newest one ‘Doktor Kosmos’ is already waiting to be officially released. http://www.silentpoem.de/ / http://www.facebook.com/pages/Silent-Poem/145046545535035

Music & Performance
That style which this band is playing has been called “Geig’n’Rock”, a modern kind of folk rock and that’s what you were offered if you did gather already in front of the stage. This time the band had a new member with them on stage with Doktor Kosmos. After the lively start of the show with ‘Mein starkes Herz’, they dedicated the next song to him. Homage to a source of inspiration so to say! An ode to the summer followed it right up and was exactly the right thing for the audience to forget the depressing conditions outside. Together with a band in top shape they celebrated the warmth, but the cold would have their appearance just as well later in the set with ‘Eiskalt voraus’, but honestly it didn’t stand a chance inside the venue. JOACHIM WITT eventually paid a visit in the shape of his hit ‘Der goldene Reiter’. A little bit of culture at the start of the weekend before the vibrant show found its end with some ‘Kirschsaft’. A successful warm-up for the evening!

Letzte Instanz

LETZTE INSTANZ was founded in 1996 in Dresden. After they approached some labels under the former name RESISTANCE they signed a record deal with the label Costbar and recorded their first songs which are included on the first album. Later the band then changed their name to LETZTE INSTANZ. Before they even released their second album, singer Hörbi and bass player Kaspar left the band. Sebastian Lohse aka Robin Sohn and Rasta F. took over as singer and bass player. After the release of their fourth album ‘Götter auf Abruf’, again three members of the band (incl. the singer) left the band. With him a new era began for LETZTE INSTANZ which culminated in the 2010 release of ‘Heilig’, the second album of a trilogy started with ‘Schuldig’. LETZTE INSTANZ is Holly (vocals), M. Stolz (violin), B. Cellini (cello), Oli (guitar), Holly D. (guitar), Micha (bass) and David Pätsch (drums). http://www.letzte-instanz.de/ / http://www.myspace.com/letzteinstanz

Music & Performance
Now it was about time for LETZTE INSTANZ to hit the stage. It got dark for a while and an unusually dark intro sounded to give accompaniment to their appearance that took really off afterwards with ‘Mein Gott’ with rolling guitars and crunchy rhythms while Holly instantly started involving the audience. It didn’t remain like that though, because other than with many bands there’s not just one front man here. The straight rocking ‘Atme!’ had almost forgotten everyone to do what the title actually says: Breathe! But instead there was loud chanting from everywhere, whereas you have to say that with ‘Maskenball!’ they were freaking out even more. Next up Holly explained it’s gotten very quiet in the backstage area due to communication only happening over laptop keyboards: The benefits of Facebook. Well, back to the music and ‘Schlaf, Schlaf’ with grand acoustic incursions and a multitude of waving hands.

For the following ‘Tanz’ there was an experiment on the schedule that involved the first row clinging to the stage rim , the second row to step back a little and have their hands fall on the first row’s people’s shoulders. When the song started then it was all about jumping as high and long as you could. But afterwards the people needed to catch a breath first, before taking on the next task to spread some light at the third verse of the deeply melancholic ‘Dein Licht’ (Your Light). Still no rest for the wicked, for the people were ordered to kneel down and rise again by Holly who kind of took the part of a king with that, speaking to his people. With so much fun at a show time flies and before you knew the hour struck for the set closer ‘Finsternis’, but not without a little singing contest prior to the song starting. Actually, they could’ve stayed on stage right away as they were loudly called back anyway to present three more tracks, one of which was to become a highlight of the evening, and that was ‘Wir sind allein’.

The crowd was supposed to hold their neighbours hands while holding all their hands up in the air for the entirety of the song. As a reward, if they managed, they could buy the band a drink. Irresistible incentive, I’d say... Anyway, as always it was one of the great moments a show of LETZTE IINSTANZ had to offer and at the end after the band left the stage, there was one photographer having the honour to step right on stage to conserve the mood and the excitement in some pictures. At least that gave the band some time for a break before having to come back for another triple encore, including the crowd pleaser ‘Rapunzel’, mixed with a LETZTE INSTANZ version of the BEASTIE BOYS ‘(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (to Party!)’. The show found a quiet end with the balladry ‘Winterträne’. Without any exaggeration we can say it was a fantastic evening.
