Album Review

TSJUDER is a cult Norwegian Black Metal band that disbanded in 2006 just shortly after their highlight album ‘Desert Northern Hell’. With a reactivation of the project, vocalist Nag, guitarist Draugluin and drummer AntiChristian still carry on their blasphemies, although with this new offering they’ve gotten a bit more subtle about the anti-Christian nature of their music. ‘Kill For Satan’ and ‘Desert Northern Hell’ were pretty obvious in where the band stood, but during the time Black Metal fans were crazy for themes of this type. Now, in a new age and time where fear tends to rule the world, the band has opted for mostly Norwegian lyrics and a few Satanic elements thrown in here and there, but overall to bring forth a new mystical aspect to the group to reinstate the cult feeling that was there in 2004. To compare ‘Legion Helvete’ to ‘ Desert Northern Hell’, where fans were left off as far as full length albums go, the album pretty much keeps the same formula. Fast, raw, black metal without the heaps of distortion, much like a TAAKE album. ‘Fra en Råtten Kiste’ is a fine example of TSJUDER at their fastest, even though the drums can be a bit of a blur and help further the track along a bit faster than it should.

‘Voldsherskeren’ includes a bit more rhythm, touching a bit on DARKTHRONE, but still carries itself quickly. If one wants easy pace and rhythm, they can check out ‘Blod og Aske’ which reminisces of KHOLD, a Norwegian Black n’ Roll band, but TSJUDER is still a lot heavier to escape the idea of the sub genre. However, in trading for catchy rhythms, the music can get a bit repetitive. One thing TSJUDER does keep up with that they do well is include at least one epic track, which they’ve done for the last three albums. ‘Vårt Helvete’ isn’t their longest track, but still holds as the main standout on the album. It melds the speed of ‘Fra en…’ with the melodies of ‘Voldsherskeren’ for a less than boring track that is sure to keep one awake without any problems. Again, like most of the fast tracks on the album, the drums tend to get lost in the mix, but when the rhythms slow down a bit they can be heard briefly. Overall, the sound is solid and gives everything the average ‘kvlt’ Black Metal fan would desire. It’s not as raw as ‘Kill For Satan’, but more mature without any sudden delves into unknown territory that might alienate those who have been anticipating the return of this band. For those who are into the more modern Black Metal like CRADLE OF FILTH or DEATHSPELL OMEGA, this may not be for them. However, those who grew up with the 90s horde of IMMORTAL or FUNERAL WINDS will find this much more appealing.
