THE SWEET was one of the “names” of Glam Rock scene of ’70s - ‘80s. The British band has had some difficult times over its existence, these days there are two versions and the one that concerns us is the one headed by Andy Scott, their original guitarist, who has put together an album of covers in ‘New York Connection’ album. They cover songs from ACE FREHLEY, DEAD OR ALIVE, ELECTRIC FRANKENSTEIN, THE RAMONES, THE WHO, PATTI SMITH & BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN and so on.
So... as you can imagine the lovers of that era and of this particular genre will have a ball with this. And if you’re not, you might not find say the cover of ‘You Spin Me Round’ better than the original song of DEAD OR ALIVE or even MARYLIN MANSON’s cover of it, but you’ll still have fun. Ironically the best moment is THE SWEET’s own song ‘New York Connection’ with pure sense of fun and old style rocking out. ‘Because The Night’, the song of PATTI SMITH & BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN, does actually shine out as a cover - even if it still doesn’t reach the passion of the original song it is still a great contender for enjoyment of this album. As its biggest appeal is for fans of the band and the nostalgists for the era it’s limited. If chosen for just a little bit of fun I recommend only looking it up eventually on YouTube, purchasing this for that little bit of fun may be too much to ask during these austere times.
