Album Review

STEALING AXION hail from USA and were founded in 2009, year later saw a release of their first single and this year brings their new, debut album ‘Moments’. The album is loosely based on the ponderings on the end of the world, and by loose I mean that the band likes to give the listener a room for their own interpretations. In some ways it comes reminiscent of MESHUGGAH especially when it comes to ‘Everything Or Nothing’ and the following ’47 Days’, though at least this tendency is not overdone in far too much of a clone vibe. The melodic tendencies and contrasts may even win some of the detractors of Djent style into at least little bit of appreciation. Needless to say, this is a complex album that starts out mellow and hardens up as it unfolds with mellow, progressive parts.

The conflict of the concept is at times matched perfectly by the melodic against the dissonant, the equally measured clean vocals vs. screams and growls, the emotive vs. the thinking emphasis. Though it comes under ‘Progressive Metal’ it’s probably better to call it ‘Experimental’ as it’s an amalgam of styles; there are also some Death Metal elements and some Sludge, and even some streams that could be more in lieu with Prog/Art Rock. At times I felt the song-writing could have been tighter, and I’d even have liked it to build the atmospheres it started to construct into more intricate and thicker layers, the vocal needs to get stronger as well, but overall they feel to be on the right path to achievement – after all this is a debut and in terms of promise there’s plenty of it and the album’s worth of being checked out.
