Album Review

TRUE ZEBRA is Kevin Strauwen from Belgium who has created quite a buzz with critics and music lovers alike upon self-releasing his eponymous debut album back in 2010. While he's currently working on the follow-up, we're going to take a closer look at this one. The first track of it is titled 'The Silence' and delivers understatement in sound. A little of the IAMX spirit is in there, only that this is far less theatrical and lacks the great drama. Reduced to the message, while a prominent bass line leads the way. 'Delirious' is coming along nicely as a modern representative of classic disco sound with a dark glamour. Monotony is everything, and everything is monotony within the first moments of 'Sounds Easy' before you realize that the title is purest irony. Nothing easy, just heavy sounds and sombre moods building up to the darkest track so far. While building 'Under Control' is creating a subtle feeling of unease without using any pads, keys or whatever

Field recordings open 'Get Out' where you can physically sense the danger closing in, never revealing its true face to you keeping you alone in the dark. It builds up tension, though never providing any relief and that can make you go crazy as a listener. 'Boy Says Nothing' does exactly nothing to change that. Demons lurking in the shadows while we're reaching into a psychotic sphere. It is almost like a soundtrack to underscore a really creepy thriller- With no drums used at all, the mood is taking you all in, and it will get to you, promised. The birds at the end then almost come across like a mock. 'Everybody Needs' provides a good base to dance right away, never being as mighty as any of its peers, it bears an insistence to dancing, like a hidden order intertwined with the orchestration. 'Conversion' closes the album with an organic compound of twisted electronics and clever use of sampling, field recordings and acoustic instruments that will leave an impression

An impression the entire album leaves. As you're going through the tracks of 'True Zebra', you're becoming aware of the talent that is concentrated here. More conventional songs alternate with amazing constructions, revealing so many fine details and intense moods. Highly recommended if you want to get your hands on a fresh collection of music.
