Album review

SCHÖNGEIST (Aesthete) describes a person who is dedicated more to the fine arts than the banalities of the daily life. And so this German band, founded in 2006 by the singer Timur Karakus, focuses on aesthetic with their music and lyrics. Successfully by doing so it is no wonder that they attracted a growing number of listeners within a short time especially while touring with LETZTE INSTANZ and EISBRECHER. After their releases of Liebeskrieger’ (Love warrior) in 2009 and ‘Keine Zeit’(No time) in 2011, ‘Wehe!’ is their third album. Again all lyrics are in German except the cover version of ‘Where the wild roses grow’. The main topics of their lyrics are about the struggle a person is in and the fight for the love of another person, the longing, the despair and the great dreams. Problems every one of us has experienced.

For this album they had additionally Günther Hausner and Alexander Wesselsky (mastermind of EISBRECHER) in their boat as co- songwriter. ‘Wehe!’ (Woe is me) starts with a violin play and a choir in the background as intro before it goes on with powerful rock sounds. Noticeable is that most of the songs have an intro before the main part of the song starts. While almost the whole album is quite rocking the song ‘Ich bin dafür’ (I’m for it) is more a ballad. Definitely nice is the combination of rock songs dominated by guitars with the violin parts. Regarding the lyrics I had at some parts the impression that they did copy and paste song lines from other songs. In any case you can hear the influence of the collaboration with Alexander Wesselsky regarding the composition of the music.

The last song of this album is the cover version of ‘Where the wild roses grow’. It could be worse but personally I’m quite picky with cover versions of great songs and here I have to say: nice try but you could have done something else as a final for the album. Anyway it is a solid German rock album with loud guitars and good vocals of the singer.
