Album Review

PINKISH BLACK were founded in 2011 and released their self-titled debut the following year. In 2013, the duo released its second album ‘Razed To The Ground’ via Century Media. The band plays a form of alternative rock, which only makes use of drums, vocals and synthesizer. The opener ‘She Left Him Red’ provides a first glimpse of the band’s reduced yet complex style – since no guitars are included, the sound appears to be very electronic, yet harsh and atmospheric. The vocals appear to be distorted and somewhat fuzzy, which corresponds to an unearthly mood. This becomes furthermore visible in the beginning of ‘Ashtray Eyes’, which may also include some allusions to the first phase of electronic music. In this very song, the vocals are less diffused. ‘Kites And Vultures’ proves to be faster, more straight-forward and relatively drum dominated.

The following title track ‘Razed To The Ground’ is rather unspectacular, whereas ‘Bad Dreamer’ includes several piano motifs which re-occur throughout the song. In general, the vibe of this song is very dark and melancholic, almost depressive, making it an outstanding track on ‘Razed To The Ground’. ‘Rise’ continues in a more heavy and reduced manner. With ‘Loss Of Feeling Of Loss’, the longest track concludes the album - a mixture of repetitive and melodic parts. In general, ‘Razed To The Ground’ is a rather complex album, that takes several listens to open up - there is surely a lot of potential involved, although some parts and feelings are relatively hard to grasp. This sort of dark, wave and punk influenced music is mostly dedicated to open minded fans of electronic and alternative music in general.
