Album Review

‘Savages’, the ninth album of SOUFLY feels to come on the heels of previous ‘Enslaved’ – it’s been only a year since its release. It boasts guest appearances - Neil Fallon of CLUTCH on ‘Ayatollah Of Rock 'N' Rolla’ (a song-title alone brings a nod to Mad Max II), on ‘K.C.S’ there’s Mitch Harris of NAPALM DEATH and on ‘Fallen’ Jamie Hanks of I DECLARE WAR helps to tune up some Death Metal touches. Is this enough though not to make it a tired aftermath of a run? The lyrics that still contain Cavalera’s interest in politics show a straight forward raging that doesn’t match more complex times, less can mean more at times but you gotta really hit that bull’s eye of brevity and originality of thought, not so much of such a case is to be found on here.

Never mind that issue though, let’s say they may not interest one anyhow, what about the music? ‘Bloodshed’ opens the album with a siren-sound to declare a state of emergency further elaborated by punch of Cavalera’s pushing as much explosive rage into his vocal that tries to persuade us that he still has all it takes to kick ass, also it sports quite a nice solo apart of a crunchy riffs underlined by soft piano key lift. ‘Fallen’ with the Death Metal undertones brings the dark, apocalyptic feel to the forefront. Fallon’s collaboration brings a narrative force to ‘Ayatollah Of Rock 'N' Rolla’ and it really comes here to say how much contrasting Cavalera’s somewhat monotonous vocal approach comes to pay off with elevating it to a yet more interesting level. Although too lengthy it’s the best song on here where it comes to my opinion. Where I don’t see the need for the whole length here it’s justified with another longish song ‘El Comegente’ where the experimental feel of the last quarter of the song is a positive. ‘Savages’ is a solid album though I wouldn’t say it set a benchmark, it’s a good effort and nothing much more.
