Album Review

‘The Lights Are Violent Here’, a debut album, comes from a Finnish band that according to its promo “represents Nordic dark wave where British post punk meets urban Finnish melancholic landscapes - a marriage of somewhat danceable poppy tunes with screeching machinery drumming the yearning background.” There are two feelings I’m getting listening to this, and their contradictory nature means I’ve got mixed feelings. The negative is that the melancholy part is at times overlaboured. They are certainly better when they are more poppy say as in ‘Shame’. Yet the melancholy seems to form a conceptual feeling, a connecting glue of coherence within the album. The guitars and drums seem to give the keyboards and melodies rougher edges and a more raw sound, which seems to impress another contradiction – there’s a feeling that the material has been honed and refined too much in the idea sector to be raw and rough so it’s more an effect than an intrinsic nature of what it’s trying to convey. However, it’s a promising album that is worth a listen or two with expectations left for future releases.
