Album Review

SABATON is a Swedish Power/ Heavy Metal band, founded in 1999. The band is well-known for their characteristic blending of military and historical lyrical topics. Their most recent album ‘Heroes’ follows up on highly acclaimed records like ‘Coat of Arms’ (2010) or ‘Primo Victoria’ (2005). On ‘Heroes’, SABATON continue where they ended with ‘Carolus Rex’ and except for some line-up changes (singer Joakim and bassist Pär remaining the two only founding members), nothing has considerably changed.

Powerful and impellent titles like the opener ‘Night Witches’, the guitar-dominated ‘Resist and Bite’ or ‘To Hell And Back’ are constructed with very straight-forward structures and march-invoking drum patterns. Those songs are contrasted with slower tracks like ‘The Ball Of Bull’, the lyrically-rousing ‘Inmate 4859’ with its borderline-catchy hook line or the final, epic ‘Hearts Of Iron’. Taken altogether, this makes for less than 40 minutes of playing time with easy-going and forthright Power Metal. SABATON surely have their own and distinct sound, which will find appreciation among their fans. However, although ‘Heroes’ is a solid effort, it does not necessarily sound innovative and is, at least for my personal taste, slightly too cheesy and flat.
