Album Review

Founded in 1988, THRESHOLD are a British Progressive/ Heavy Metal band. Thus far, they have released ten studio records, of which especially their latest ‘March Of Progress’ (2012) has been critically acclaimed. The successor ‘For the Journey’ marks a continuation of THRESHOLD’s very own blending of melody, heaviness and progressive song structures. The opener ‘Watchtower On The Moon’ offers energetic riffs, Damian’s charismatic vocals, THRESHOLD’s remarkable, unconventional melodies and a blending of guitar and keyboard solos. Moreover, the band’s song structures appear as rather varied, contrasting between calmer and more straight-forward parts. ‘Unforgiven’ is an emotional and vocal-driven song, which is less heavy than its predecessor.

The following ‘The Box’ is with 12 minutes by far the longest song on the album and consists of different chapters, which form a highlight of the album and incorporates different moods, sentiments and tempo changes. ‘Turned To Dust’ is again a straighter song, whereas ‘Lost In Your Memory’ and ‘The Mystery Show’ illustrate the band’s capacity for slower and nevertheless absorbing, epic tunes. ‘Autumn Red’ conveys a colder, electronically-driven and melancholic atmosphere, whereas the conclusive ‘Siren Sky’ offers a suiting and good end for the album. Although ‘For The Journey’ is roughly 50 minutes long, it conveys a lot of different emotions and can convince with good musicianship, nice and variable songs and a good production. Moreover, THRESHOLD further define and re-define their own style.
