Album Review

1976 seems almost prehistoric now, and for any band from that era to be still playing with such a cheeky enthusiasm and joie de vivre as Edinburgh's THE REZILLOS is quite something. Emerging at the same time as the more visceral and politically minded UK punk bands, they chose a more light-hearted, though not lightweight, approach that incorporated 1950's Rock 'n Roll, with garage rock and hints of glam thrown into the mix. Having more in common with US bands like THE B52'S and THE CRAMPS, there was also a plenty of ghoulish humour amongst the clatter. Internal friction, splitting up, reforming as THE REVILLOS, line-up changes and occasional recorded output, for a full album release now back under their original moniker is nothing short of a post-punk miracle.

There's just about everything you could want here. Madcap sci-fi surf rock instrumental? Try the title track. Heavy rock riffing and ludicrous vocals bounding about like a leather-clad spring lamb in the rain? 'Number One Boy' does all that. A punk AC/DC? Why, here's 'life's A Bitch'. And try not grinning during the irresistible 'Nearly Human' or the headlong glam-thrash of closing track 'Out Of This World'. There seems no doubt that THE REZILLOS have earned the right to keep on the pop-punk path they helped shape, in chief because they aren't content to churn out dated and increasingly lumpen attempts at capturing the glory days. If the question is, why have prehistoric THE REZILLOS released a new album in 2015? The answer seems to be simply because they can. Good stuff.
