Album Review
TRUE ZEBRA is a one person-project. To survive in its world you should be into vintage synths, old-school industrial and aesthetics of Clockwork Orange. As Kevin Strauwen himself describes his project, it was conceived as rock but mistaken with electronic tries and techniques. In general the album ‘War of the Words’ sounds very easy and minimal: in the basic there are synth-melodies, spiced with drums, effects and vocals. Typical asocial themes are simple, clear, but sometimes the meaning is lost... or maybe supported with the effects. Influences by NINE INCH NAILS, MARILYN MANSON, RECOIL are very strong. Don't forget, that the whole project concept is based on the one person - a grown man lost in his wires, who lives with a cat (as if there was something wrong about it). The visual part (must be also by Strauwen) completes the impression: a lot of zebras (obviously), shadow plays and collages.
TRUE ZEBRA brings back the challenging music. The more efforts you make to see the real face of the author, the harder you look into the shadows, the closer you are to yourself. There is no track on the album which will be playing at a party or in a store. There is nothing on this album what will make you jump out of your chair and inspire to shout out loud what a genius work it is. Although the track ‘Everything Is Mediocre’ might even make you dance a bit. In the end the potential listener should have at least one NIN album, which has been played for thousand times in his/ her player. But if you are longing for the new musical experiences - TRUE ZEBRA should be on your list.
