Album Review

Being on a drifting ship, while the merciless cold waves hit it, is no fun. But you also cannot be sure that what you'll find at the unknown harbour is any better. But you'll be fine having couple of friends and a guitar on your ship. ‘As We make Our Way’, just as most of indie rock albums, seem to be born exactly in such a desperate melancholic and existential atmosphere. SOPHIA combines two effects in its sound: deep bass, as if it comes from the womb or under water; and pretty thin echoes as it comes to a slippery metallic surface. And as each song unfolds, you can clearly hear all the tiny and pretty details, such as jewellery percussion, ringing keys and strings. There is nothing original in the vocals, but exactly such a manner fits this genre the best. The tempo of the album doesn't change through the playtime - it's calm and dreamy.

Even such intense songs as ‘Resisting’, ‘St. Tropez/ The Hustle’ or ‘California’ still have a bold structure, which provide a pillow to draw in. Together with the songs above another highlight of the album would be ‘Blame’. But in fact you can pick any song from the album and get the general impression of the rest. SOPHIA should be easy to find on the musical shelves among The NATIONAL and ARCADE FIRE. It is a miracle that this musical genre is still popular and even growing. And the current SOPHIA's album also proves that it is still far away from the final destination. Remember, the ship does not have a path to go, the track is left behind. So, if you're in love with indie and post rock and you still have no idea about SOPHIA – ‘As We Make Our Way (Unknown Harbours)’ is a great way to get familiar with your new favourite band.
