Album Review

‘Leben passiert’ is the first album of the Berlin-based five-piece, working under the moniker RADIOPILOT since 2006. In August 2007, they signed the label contract with Columbia, a Sony/BMG label and in November hit the road for a tour in support of JULI.

The title to the album ‘Leben passiert’ (Life happens) is to be taken seriously because that’s what the album is about: The small stories happening in everyday’s life, even if they are a bit strange like on the title ‘Fahrrad’ which says “We ride our bikes around the block, but what if that bike doesn’t exist”. The songs aren’t bound to any specific genre, even if they mostly swim in poppy waters. The opening track ‘Du + Ich in Stereo’ for instance starts with gently arranged strings passing over to a more bombastic arrangement as soon as the drums and guitars kick in. Over to the fairly grooving follow-up, simply titled ‘Ok’. ‘Tokyo: Berlin’ underlines the mentioned stylistic diversity of the band with a mixture of retro electronic beats with little gadgets and guitar sounds. Textual-wise it describes the longing in a long-distance relationship. ‘Monster’ which is also the preceding single to the album, is another song, worth mentioning and as it turns out, was a good choice as it has all necessary requirements; a catchy chorus, inviting you to sing along; and an easy rhythm. If you’re more into the rocking stuff then check out the next track ‘Foto von dir’ which also has this garage attitude you know, a bit rawer and unpolished. Guess it will turn out as a great live track as well.

I for one have a penchant for the more melancholic side of life and then a song like ‘Sing doch’ comes in handy, perfectly transporting that feeling, blended with longing. ‘Surfen’ radiates an exceptional calmness while xylophone sounds fly over an elaborate electronic rhythm just to flow into an atmospherically dense, powerful chorus with piano and dramatic string support. Preluded by a gentle piano melody is ‘Zoogedanken’ and on its bland wings of melancholy it carries you far away; and the emotional chorus is hard to beat for its dramatic. ‘Leben passiert’ is an album without harder edges, but with much emotion, a pinch of craziness and musical diversity I would wish to see with a few more newcomer bands.
