PHASE III is less a band then rather a collective of musicians grouping around founder and mastermind Leviathan and with ‘Es wird Dunkel’ we now have the result of their month-spanning work.
With the mid-temp ‘Friendly Damage’ the album’s kicking off that does work with a variety of speech samples not taking from any movie sources; they have a special man recording those samples himself. The track is additionally embellished with vocals in English and German with melodic guitar flourishes added for good measure. ‘Trauermarsch’ employs the notes of Marche funébre, the third movement of Chopin’s piano sonata No.2 and hard industrial beats and guitar lines with partly whispering chant. Very future pop styled is the track ‘So Say We All’ with hymnal melodies and dance floor friendly rhythms plus a little bit of rock. For the title track, the project thought of something really special and builds up lyrics out of various song titles, band names etc from the Goth scene. Everything blended with spherical melodies and club beats and as a result you have a catchy anthem. We’re going to wrap this whole thing up with two cover versions; one of NEW ORDER’s probably most famous song of all time ‘True Faith’ that with S.T.E.F.F.E.N’s rawer vocals sets a slightly different accent to the usual cover versions and mixes it with a couple guitar lines.; the second one is another well-known tune originally performed by VISAGE: ‘Fade To Grey’ this version was being sped-up a bit and made fit for the clubs.
You can’t complain here about a lack of diversity on ‘Es wird Dunkel’. Lots of different styles come together on the album and still it all comes across as a cohesive body of work. Recommended for club goers as well as for home-listeners with a pronounced soft spot for synthetic sounds!
