Album Review

80s-nostalgic enthusiasts and fans of analogue synth sounds watch out, because this new ear candy from the house of SCARLET SOHO will probably please you! About 20 years after the in many respects formative decade of the 1980s had drawn to its end, the English three-piece consisting of James (vocals, guitar), Scarlet (bass, vocals, keyboards) and Stu (keyboards) committed itself to the analogue and danceable compositions of that time and rides on the recent wave of reviving retro sounds. The opener `I dare´ will make you feel like being in a time machine, as the piece is a danceable prime example of how old and new elements generate rousing melodies that will make you dance. Besides the typical stylistic devices of former times, the second track `Model of Control´ also features a certain pinch of Ska regarding the rhythm while `Analogue Dialogue (Kill the Beat)´ strongly reminds me of DURAN DURAN songs.

Despite all attraction to retro-like details and a strong affinity to nearly traditional synth lines, SCARLET SOHO isn’t just a simple copy of well-known representatives. By adding some keyboard gimmicks and the nonchalant vocals of lead singer James, the formation provides short and extremely catchy Pop gems that won’t get out of your head after listening. Beside the aforementioned `Analogue Dialogue´ and the picture-perfect Pop anthem `Is Growing Up The Best That We Can Do? ´, `Modern Radio´ easily sums up the attitude `Warpaint´ stands for: Classic Synth Pop pieces that frankly confess being influenced by avant-garde dinosaurs such as DEPECHE MODE and DURAN DURAN. The ballad-like `Satellites´ stands out from the crowd of up-tempo dance tracks. The rest is fresh and at the same time conventional stuff captivating me due to these characteristics.
