Album Review
After relocating to New York City in 1985, ROB ZOMBIE became the front man of the popular band WHITE ZOMBIE with whom he has released 9 albums. Since 1996 he’s exclusively working solo and already his first album ‘Hellbilly Deluxe’, released in 1998 was certified 3-times platinum in the US. Besides his musical work, he’s been directing several movies since 2003, amongst them 2 remakes of the Halloween series. ‘Hellbilly Deluxe 2’, nearly 12 years later picks up a thread that’s almost been considered dead.
An ice-cold wind blows around an old mansion in the dead of night, sneaks through the cracks in its facade and creates a creepy howling. Just the scenario you would want a classic horror movie to start with. On ‘Hellbilly Deluxe 2’ it announces the start of the opening ‘Jesus Frankenstein’, which turns out as heavy, literally night-drenched number inside of which down-tuned guitars are chief in the ring and whose chorus line opens a view to a legion of zombies, all greeting their master with “All hail Jesus Frankenstein”. ‘What?’ starts off with a classic movie sample, then shows its real face which is the one of a rather classic rock song with a pugnacious stance and vintage organ sounds. ‘Mars Needs Women’ just offers a gloomy Americana-inspired acoustic guitar theme in the beginning, but grows up to become a furious mid-paced rocker with the forcing order that “Mars needs women / angry red women”. That reminds me so much of a political or military recruiting campaign “Your Country needs you.”
If Zombie hasn’t been inspired by dirty Garage Rock on ‘Death And Destiny Inside the Dream Factory’ then I don’t know. Sounds like being a product of a spontaneous jam session in the rehearsal rooms, but its raw charm also keeps it interesting. The crowning show case ‘The Man Who Laughs’ brings together a creepy orchestral score with traditional rock instrumentation and with that is creating a blistering experience. My kudos goes out here to guitarist John 5 and moreover to drummer Tommy. Listening to his extended drum solo is an experience every time and won’t cease to amaze even after countless listens. I have a soft spot for horror movies and for good rock music. On ‘Hellbilly Deluxe 2’ I’m getting both, served as an appealing cocktail. The album is definitely an accomplished work of strong musical craftsmanship.
