Album Review

Looking at the eventful life of Henning Sedlmeir makes that guy seem very old. At least you get that impression. He's had countless musical projects already, explored various stylistic directions and with its activities rocked several stages to the ground. Probably his most prominent one is the project he's running under his own name. The first album 'Hard Rock Roboter' gains significant attention within the independent music scene, and the second album 'Feelings' is said to be a bold entertainment show. That one man army now has his third disc 'Import Export' ready for takeoff.

The term bold also fits the opener 'T-Nage Service' perfectly if you ask me. Completely unadjusted, with a punky attitude and the help of guitars and subtle electronics he created a little opus that you either like or not. Contrary to that the following 'Schwarze Katze' goes deeper, below the surface of the artist's personality it feels. A reflective character dwells between the walls of this song made of subtle percussions and dirty guitars. 'Unten Mit dem All' takes a rather philosophical route lyric-wise. It goes about the role of humanity in the great order of things and about the fact that the moon can only travel one way for instance. 'Hund Ohne Beine' might be a short one, but one track that will leave a very long impression with its use of German street slang and the steady repetition of a word I don't want to translate right now. 'Rock'n'Roll' turns up the BPM count with pounding electronic beats, added to the classic riff that is appearing later.

The all electronic track 'Mr. Brown' features exclusively English lyrics for once. It is purest Oxford English as only British people can speak it. Well, at least it's that posh expression of the words that lets you think it is. That way of expressing the words, deliberately trying to sound serious, makes you want to laugh out loud at many points. The 'Unsubscribe Theme' is devoid of any kind of vocals. Only the instruments speak here if you want to call it that way. Electronically and naturally crafted sounds together create an intense mood. With its jazzy flair the song sometimes reminds me of BOHREN & DER CLUB OF GORE while not reaching their class though. The closing and title track of the album is made up like an interview, conducted by a passionate admirer of SEDLMEIR's art, and well-spoken the artist himself politely answers everything while slow electronic beats, organ and gentle guitar chords move onwards.

Actually, you would need to give SEDLMEIR an award for the most entertaining indie record. And I mean that regarding the humour it bears. SEDLMEIR obviously doesn't take himself too seriously, so you should take it with a pinch of salt as well. Shouldn't hide the fact that the guy is indeed an excellent musician and that the album does have enough grave moments as well! Best is you check it out when it's out and get infected.
