Introduction

Regicide, a wellknown name, but not everyone is familiar with this German band. Maybe you remember them from their tour with In Extremo or saw them on Wacken Open Air. Well they are back after a year with a new fresh record. It is already the third release and a lot happend in between. The sound of the band changed a bit, there were line-up changes. Most important is that ‘Break The Silence’ is the perfect record to have a breakthough to a bigger audience. It is a mixture between Lacuna Coil, Angelzoom and the old gothic roots. So there is a lot to discover on this new album. Nice detail: the band worked with producer Chris Wolff, also from Within Temptation.

Line-up

Frauke Richter – vocals
Timo Südhoff – vocals
Heiner Jaspers – piano
Jonna Wilms – violin
Jan Janssen – guitar
Malte Hunold – bass
Til Kasmann – drums

Songreview

01. Plastic Dove - 3.40
The album starts with a dark, low and deep violin. I am surprised with that, because there are not that many gothic bands who dare to put the violin in the front mix of the sound. The reason is that besides the vocals, this instrument is a trademark of the band. Soon the songs starts to get more heavy and female vocalist Frauke grabs me with her catchy sound. The stucture of the song is very melodic and the vocals are dynamic and that makes you want to hear more.

02. The Hanger On - 3.41
A dreamy atmosphere is created by an acoustic guitar and the classical sounding violin. How beautiful it is, when you can play so fluently, Jonna is a real talented musician. The song grows and both vocalists get all the space to show their emotions in this balade. Even some folk influences are there. It reminds me of the duet Tarja Turunen did with Martin Kesici “Leaving You For Me.”

03. Pirates - 5.34
A more heavy song, which even can remind you of a heavy Apocalyptica intro: an aggressive, dramatic violin and with some imagination you see the sea and the lyrics tell you the story. Frauke and Timo are more clean here and show their soft side. The dry drumsound makes it more dynamic, but it is for sure that this song is more vocally orientated and focussed on that. Very danceable melody and it stays in your head.

04. Nothing In Here - 3.56
The classical piano intro combined with a violin: it sounds so classical and clean. It is a different approach of gothmetal who know nowadays, but goes back to the old roots. Frauke is not a soprano and her voice has the power, but also the techniques to sing very melodic, modest and soft. Timo is not the best man vocalist, but the combination of both makes the melody strong. The balade is brought with an itense feeling and Regicide shows here there strenght: making melodic strong songs with a lot to discover in it.

05. Break The Silence - 5.35
Finally the guitarsolo is there in the titletrack. Drums and violin come in and the song grows to a catchy beat. The more metal guitarriffs are there and Timo’s voice is more forced into a musical, dramatic attitude. This heavy approach makes the duet between him and the female vocalist more gothmetal like we know from Lacuna Coil and Epica. This song will be a stong one for the liveshows, because its dynamic.

06. A World Without Oceans - 4.59
The energic mood goes on with the heavy intro: it grabs you and makes you curious of where this leads to. Drumbeat mixed with an Arabic sound and fluently the instuments are changing position in the mix. Sometimes the violin, then the drumbeat and guitarriffs. The light elements with the piano carry the melody for the vocalists. Synchromic and with a style that reminds a lot of Lacuna Coil during the Comalies period. Impressive how this band can create such a full, but clean sound. The stucture of their songs is very detailed and all the instruments have their own place.

07. This Unpredictable Life - 5.16
The classical piano is back and Jonna creates totally oposite sound then before: slow and with the slow melodyline from Frauke the song is a real midtempo gothic balade. There is more power when Timo shows his emotions, but it seems to be a simple version of what we heard before in the other songs. When Frauke sings in a more soprano way her sound is thin and not strong, shame that she choose this way.

08. Forgotten Promises -  4.34
A full intro with arrangements and a technical drumbeat. Suddenly Timo and Frauke are coming in and it sounds very different then before: the dynamic sound is back. This couple is convincing in their fast vocal changes and not seaking their talent in the high parts. Timo’s strenght is in this song: the clean, but broken voice. Together with the dramatic violin and guitars the song is one of the outstanding ones on this record.

09. An Embracing Space Pt III – Part III: Eclipsing Lights - 8.49
Classical arrangements, a long melodramatic part brings the listener to an other world. A masterpiece of Regicides talent. A contrast between both vocalists. It is amazing how all the musicians managed to create a sound where nothing is too full or double. The basslines are more minimalised, but the guitars from Jan are often heavy mixed with the technical drumbeats of Til. All together Regicide builds-up their sound step by step without losing sight for the details. The result is this emotional and defying song.

10. Perfect Strings -  5.16
A more furalistic start, but soon the elements of the vocals and violin are there. With a heavy bass, but again not so overwelming as the song before. A dramatic duet is the end of this suprising record. With some light elements and a soft vibe Regicide breaks the silence in a very own way.

Techinal Summary

Total playing time: 51.19
Total songs: 10

Conclusion

Regicide is a new fresh sound in the gothmetal scene. Not the typical high vocals, but a combination like we know from Lacuna Coil. With the difference that the vocals of Timo are more clean. Together with the violin and the classical elements this band gives a new dimension ot the gothic sound. They dare to mix it with some heavy drums and guitars. For the real metal fan, there are less heavy rhythm parts, but when you like some real gothic you can buy this album without any doubt. The band has Arabic elements like Epica used in their first album, but also the more catchy sound is there. A talented band who deliverd with ‘Break The Silence’ a album what’s compact and with a very own sound. I nominate them for the yearlist of 2006.
