Album Review

The inception of THE STORM in 2006 was preceded by already established successful musical careers as Johan Wohlert used to be a member of MEW - a Progressive Rock band - and Pernille Rosendahl was in SWAN LEE, an Indie Rock outfit. Soon after deciding to embark on their creative path together as THE STORM, the duo who are not only partners in music but also in life recorded their debut ‘Where The Storm Meets The Ground’ which brought them positive confirmation of making a step in the right direction. Michael Poulsen from VOLBEAT was amongst the impressed, he invited Pernille Rosendahl to perform on their penultimate album ‘Guitar Gangsters & Cadillac Blood’, and in turn Poulsen sung with Rosendahl in ‘Black Shot Eyes’ (B.S.E) for THE STORM’s upcoming album ‘Black Luck’ about which this review is all about.

So what is it like? If you’re guessing a solid Rock album with sometimes tinges of the Scandinavian brand of Metal (musically not vocally) here and there you’re on the right track. The aforementioned duet with Poulsen ‘B.S.E’ has easily made my favourite song, not only because VOLBEAT is one of the staple items on my playlists anyway, but THE STORM has invited him to sing on a great song. The album titled song is another highlight from ‘Black Luck’. There is a sense of urgency, catchy and strong, melodic, with steady beat and variations to song structure that came out very well. Best impression of all is ‘Pass for a lonely Person’ - easily the most outstanding track. Beautiful, emotive and powerfully built song, the vocals especially stand out, the shading guitar with its surges, the keyboard’s subtle presence - everything’s just perfect there.

One of the downsides I’d mention was on a second track ‘Honesty’. Although THE STORM’s lyrical input is quite simple and straightforward and quite usual without many surprises and mostly it doesn’t matter as the music is enjoyable enough to overlook that and there are many music lovers out there who don’t care about the wordy side of the music anyway but the cliché chink was a  bit too much here. Also there were some issues with production of the song, the guitar sound has some static noise as a shadowing halo and not in a way that would enhance the track, rather worsens it. THE STORM created a good and credible collection and it’s a predictable given that it will be received well by fans and most of the press. They don’t exactly take Rock one step further but at least they don’t make it stale, ‘Black Luck’ is a rousing, at times beautiful, enjoyable and satisfying album.
