Album Review

SILENT SCREAM consists of the remaining members of VARJO, a Finnish Post-punk / Gothic Rock band that ceased to exist after one of the two founding members, guitarist Henry Waldén passed away. 'In the Cinema' is their first album, presenting ten tracks with horror movie inspired lyrics. Despite the horror themed lyrics, music-wise SILENT SCREAM is not a horror punk band, but rather continues on the gothic / post punk path like its precedent VARJO. Indeed, many tracks resemble VARJO's more upbeat, edgier tracks, especially the ones on their later albums.

Like many VARJO albums, 'In the Cinema' ends with calmer tracks: soothing 'In the sea' and haunting 'The ghost in your eyes'. The album also includes a cover song 'Burning Car' - a cleverly alternate take on the John Foxx (ex-ULTRAVOX) song, inspired by J.G. Ballard's novel 'Crash'. Again, the cinematic references are present: The novel was later filmed by David Cronenberg.

The members of SILENT SCREAM are all experienced musicians and guitar work, bass lines and drumming all sound as gorgeous as one could expect. In fact, all the musical elements on 'In the Cinema' are spot-on, completed with Lautala's austere voice. Yet the album does not quite reach the level of what VARJO was as its best: it does not touch and grip the listener the way VARJO managed to do. Nevertheless, 'In the Cinema' is an album that leaves the listener yearning for more.
