Album Review

PRIMORDIAL is an extreme metal band from Skerries, County Dublin, Ireland. It was formed in 1987 by Pól MacAmlaigh (bass) and Ciarán MacUiliam (guitars). Their sound melds black metal with Irish folk music. The first demo was out in 1993 and since then the band have released 7 albums, the latest of which is ‘Redemption at the Puritan's Hand’. Every song on this album is very intense and demanding, they capture you and pretty much takes hold until they reluctantly let you go in the end of the album.

‘Lain with the Wolf’ begins with an instrumental intro that is a pleasure to listen to, the drums that follows capture my interest - interesting to hear them changing both sound and pace as the song carries on. As the song really opens up when growling guitars and Alan Averill’s dark voice joins in I am momentarily lost for words to describe everything that it brings. I did not expect this song to turn out to something like this for me falling completely for its dark charm. In the chorus everything becomes more and as the song continues one it picks up pace and if possible get even more intense and powerful. The lyrics and music both manage to create such dark and dominant atmosphere that I find it easier to breathe when the song is over - only to hit repeat one more time!

‘Bloodied yet Unbowed’ is the first single from the album. It also comes with an instrumental intro that I enjoy but this intro is different, the change come pretty subtly when instruments are added; the pace is still slow - like the calm before the storm. The combination of the demanding music and the way Alan Averill sings is impressive. I really like the way he phrase his words with such demand and force. There is no problem to hear the rage and male defiance - you can almost feel it. ‘The Mouth of Judas’ is a slow, beautiful song clad I darkness and sorrow. It’s a pleasure to listen to Alan Averill’s voice during this one, sometimes they are rough and that only adds to the charm of the song. I am listening tentative to the lyrics as the story of the song unfolds. I really enjoy the pace and music in this song and in a way it’s almost meditative. Towards the end the vocals get talkative before the song changes, becomes faster and darker.
