Album Review

I must confess that I’m more than impressed with the South African alternative scene with bands like ANKST, WINTER SOUL and NUL coming to my attention over the past couple of years. Now I can add Cyber / Industrial metal duo TERMINATRYX to that list.

The Johannesburg natives combine the raucous cyber metal of INTERLOCK and DOPE STARS INC. with a hardcore punk attitude and plenty of harsh EBM embellishments for good measure. The majority of the songs have crowd participation written all over them with plenty of sing-a-long lines throughout without the effect of giving them “Disposable Anthem” syndrome. While fans of traditional electronic music may find the guitars in songs like ‘CONsume’, ‘Tabloid Android’ and ‘The Love Song’ too aggressive for the dance floor, the instrumental songs on the album ‘Venus Rising’, ‘Absinthium’ and particularly the retro industrial / EBM of ‘Symbionik’ have more dance appeal.

There is a nice variety of sounds, styles and moods expressed on this album with good use made of the interplay between masculine and feminine vocals. The crisp and clan production feels clinical and precise - even more so when the warmth of the upright bass makes an appearance on ‘Absinthium’. For a debut album there is some very confident song writing on display if sometimes the execution doesn’t feel 100% on the mark the spirit and vibe of the songs are enough to carry them.
