Subway to Sally - “Nackt” acoustic tour

‘Subway to Sally’ - this name stands for an ecstatic stage show, hard rocking guitars in a wild mix with the violin of Mrs. Schmidt and the bagpipes of Eric Fish. The announcement of a pure acoustic set interested me, but, however, I could not really imagine it. Because of that I went to the Scala filled with mixed feelings. The Scala is a former cinema and it is a quite unusual place. Therefore it was the ideal venue for this concert. The scenery made of huge chairs and sacred window arches produced a special atmosphere. The Scala disposes beside a slightly sloping interior of a seated balcony from which you could see the concert really like in a cinema.

Music
With an additional cellist - B.Deutung – ‘Subway to Sally’ started into a romantic and quiet evening. Although it was still a little unusual at the beginning to be sitting during a concert, it was early shown that the songs did also move in the acoustic versions. The band dug deep in their discography and lifted up those wonderful pearls, so this evening was even more a time trip than a pure concert. There was a reunion with ‘Maria’ off the 1996 album ‘Foppt den Dämon’ and with Marie (‘Element des Verbrechens’) from the 1997 ‘Bannkreis’. However, also the faster songs had found a reworking and so ‘Sag dem Teufel’ - in quite new way - aroused much enthusiasm. I haven’t heard the moving song ‘Schlaflied’ for a long time and so it became a special highlight; also was the always wonderful one ‘Kleid aus Rosen’. When Eric, Bodenski, Ingo and Simon got out the prayer books for ‘Sanctus’, everybody knew how this was meant.
With the last song ‘Die Braut / Der Bräutigam’ (released in 1994/1995) ‘Subway to Sally’ went really far back in their history. Indeed, Ingo had to be persuaded singing this songs and anyone who knows the lyrics also understands why. Then for the end of the concert Subway to Sally kept the change to the present. With ‘Feuerkind’, which was supported by a real fire, they touched everyone to tears. Then the ‘Seemannslied’ put the audience on course for the way home.

Performance
The immense live qualities of the new drummer Simon Michael were a real surprise for me. In spite of his just 22 years he integrated himself easily into the band structure and convinced the audience by skill and artistic show elements. In addition, as I have to say from the female point of view, at this evening a German “Legolas” threshed on the drums. In spite of my scepticism this was a wonderful evening which has shown me again that you can also get surprised by a band after more than 12 years and eight regular albums. Now not only I am waiting for the announced DVD from the tour.
