Peter Pan Speedrock, Gewapend Beton, The Works

Tonight will be fast and loud with PETER PAN SPEEDROCK and two other Dutch punk rock bands at P60 in Amstelveen. PETER PAN SPEEDROCK has been around for a while and has quite a reputation in the Netherlands. Whether this reputation is based mostly on their show and performance or their musical skills… we’ll find out tonight! But let’s start with the supporting bands.

The Works

THE WORKS started off in 2006 by Rogier Heumakers (bass), Gilian de Haas (guitar), Marko Petrovic (vocals) and Barend van der Meer (drums). Their music can be described as a blend of THE STOOGES punk-style with the groove of THE RAMONES. THE WORKS’ lyrics deal with taboo issues in modern society such as obesity, intergenerational love and the modern male. http://www.myspace.com/cheesetheworks / http://theworksrock.nl/

Music & Performance
First: bands that use nicknames really freak me out, but THE WORKS fortunately made up for that in their show. Although almost empty at the start, P60 seemed to fill up rather quickly after THE WORKS took off with their Rock‘n’Roll repertoire. THE WORKS produce a very open and accessible style of punk - Rock‘n’Roll with a sleazy touch. The lyrics add up to their music, and the band members certainly don’t avoid a healthy dose of self-mockery. Their song about obesity and love (“I Might Have Love Handles, But I Can't Handle Love”) had some visuals added to the text, as the band members proudly showed theirs. With their groovy sound, energetic performance and edgy lyrics, this is a band hard not to like.

Gewapend Beton

GEWAPEND BETON started out in 2003 when Douwe (vocals), Oeds (guitar), Renco (Bass) and Ming (drums) were only 13 years old. They released their first demo ‘Embryo Punk’ that same year. While growing up, the punk embryos continued playing their punk songs influenced by American eighties punk bands and recorded their first full length album in 2007 entitled ‘17 Until We Die’. Two years later, another album was released in 2009 (‘Empty Batteries’). This year, GEWAPEND BETON released their 3rd full length album ‘Big Dumb Kids’. http://www.gewapendbeton.nl

Music & Performance
With the looks of Billy Idol in a Motörhead fan-shirt, I wonder what GEWAPEND BETON will personally bring to the table. They put up an energetic show from start to end, with blazing punk songs that easily fit the description tonight’s theme of speedrock. If you’re into this kind of music, a gig of these guys will definitely satisfy your needs. For me though, it was hard to distinguish one songs from another, making their show somewhat less dynamic and maybe even a bit one-sided. Musically not my cup of tea, but definitely a good live performance!

Peter Pan Speedrock

PETER PAN SPEEDROCK was founded in 1996 as simply PETER PAN (SPEEDROCK was added to the name in 2001, to make sure everyone knows what they stand for). Their musical style diverges from hard rock, punk, rockabilly and metal. Although the band had some trouble at take-off, they’ve so far released 13 albums (including three split albums and a compilation). PETER PAN SPEEDROCK consists of Peter van Elderen on vocals and guitar, Bart Gevers on bass and Bart Nederhands on drums. From 1998 on Dikke Dennis (‘Fat Dennis’), a tattoo artist from Amsterdam, has been with the band as well as guest singer, presenter and mascot of the band. PPSR has shared the stage with bands like MOTÖRHEAD, TURBONEGRO and NASHVILLE PUSSY. Last year, their latest album entitled ‘We Want Blood’ was released and PETER PAN SPEEDROCK started touring again. http://website.peterpanspeedrock.nl/

Music & Performance
(Off-topic: I couldn’t help but notice that singer Peter van Elderen has quite a resemblance to Joe Duplantier of the French death metal band GOJIRA… or vice versa… They also display the same rage in their expression on stage, which should be taken as a compliment of course. ) On topic: PETER PAN SPEEDROCK puts up a fast, tight and raging speedrock show making them definitely live up to their name. Both old and new songs announced by front man Peter are enthusiastically sung along by the audience, apparently consisting of many die-hard fans. Even their latest single ‘We Want Blood’ is supported by the audience vocals from start to finish while beer is flying over and onto the stage. In between, PETER PAN SPEEDROCK gives the audience a few breaks when their mascot ‘Dikke Dennis’ entertains the audience with a Jack-Daniels-Goodie-Bag lottery. Further on he joins Peter for some extra vocal power. Clearly, PETER PAN SPEEDROCK is still on their game to bring you a proper dose of Speedrock!
