Eisenlager (Zentrum Altenberg), Oberhausen, Germany
9th May 2006
Tanzwut & Red Ink

It’s a very nice day in spring when ‘Tanzwut’ came to play in Oberhausen – in fact maybe the day was too nice to spend the evening in a concert hall. ‘Tanzwut’ are back on tour again to present their brand-new album ‘Schattenreiter’ which was just released in April 2006. Support was the Metal-core band ‘Red Ink’ from the eastern part of Germany.

Red Ink

‘Red Ink’ – the band from the north-eastern part of Germany – started releasing music in 1995 with their tape ‘Für die Zukunft’. The Metal-core band presents music hard, provoking and without compromises – just as life is – with German lyrics. The recent album ‘Falscher Freund’ was released in December 2005. ‘Red Ink’ are Sascha Portner (bass), Oliver Schuldt (guitar), Michael “Biene” Klewin (vocals), Matthias Wolff (drums), Sebastian Watzek (guitar) and Anne Glützow (violin).

Music
when you go to see ‘Tanzwut’ you don’t really expect a band playing Metal-core stuff as support. So I was standing there with big eyes when the band started. But very soon I had a big smile in my face because that stuff was good! Two fisted sound came like a thunderstorm over the audience. Grooving riffs, brittle melodies, demanding guitars, pushing drums, fat bass and unexpected violin play are combined al-together. Above all there are the emotional words of singer “Biene”. The German lyrics are unmistakable and deal with anger, desperation, joy and hope – they just point on every-day situations. The band surprises the audience with unexpected melodies – they are never boring – and the extra pinch of salt is definitely Anne playing the violin – something you’d never expect with such a kind of band.

Performance
The band existing for more than ten years now likes to perform and they impress with their energetic shows. Like on previous shows singer Michael stated at the beginning: “Tanzwut probably only took us on tour because we are an unknown band”. But at latest after the tour with ‘Tanzwut’ that would have changed. ‘Red Ink’ present an exalted show and you feel that they enjoy being on stage. The guys are really expressive and especially Michael likes to grimace too. Anne is the more quiet part on stage – just sunk into her violin play. Several times during the show Michael asked the audience to jump and clap along and after a while it worked out pretty well. A pretty good choice for the opener I’d say.

Tanzwut

‘Tanzwut’ mainly consists of the members of ‘Corvus Corax’. But while latter ones mainly play on medieval markets, first ones are at home in the clubs where they have electric power to perform their medieval music with added electronic elements. The idea of making electronically boosted medieval music was born in 1996 but the first album was released three years later in 1999. One year later ‘Labyrinth der Sinne’ was released. With the following CD ‘Ihr wolltet Spass’ the use of real medieval instruments took a back seat compared to the beginning of the band. They took special care of bringing that album on the stages and produced several videos to underline the show. An impressive gig in Munich was recorded and released as live CD and DVD. The recent release ‘Schattenreiter’ finally saw the light of day in April 2006. ‘Tanzwut are Wim (bass guitar, bagpipes, back voc, glow-trumscheit), Hatz (keydrum, E-drums, giant-tara), Castus (bagpipes, shawm, trumscheit, voc), Teufel (vocals and bagpipes), Ardor (bagpipes, shawm, trumscheit, voc), Norri (drums, programming electronic sounds) and Patrick (guitar, back voc, bagpipes, trumscheit). Ardor – who played together with the others in ‘Corvus Corax’ - has entered the band after Koll.A left the band last year.

Music
During the intro smoke flooded the stage and Hatz entered his place behind the synthesizer to intonate the ‘Toccata’ (by Johan Sebastian Bach). ‘Tanzwut’ had shown classical influences before when they combined a bagpipe version of Beethoven’s ‘Ode to joy’ with quotes from Goethe’s ‘Faust’. The other band members entered the stage shortly after. And then the band started with full energy into ‘Ihr wollt Spass’. The mix of electronic beats, guitars, bagpipes and other medieval instruments together with Teufel’s deep chant got the audience immediately. The show was a perfect mixture of their hits from past albums as well as several songs out off the recent release. The song ‘Im tiefen Gras’ was announced as a very cool song with a very cool band – the lights were dimmed and all band members put on big dark sun glasses – cool looking you might say. The whole band had fun on stage and played their instruments with passion. As encore the earlier mentioned ‘Götterfunke’ (‘Ode to Joy’) was celebrated by the whole band - most of them playing the bagpipes. The show ended with ‘Trumscheit’ when the band members formed the band logo with their red glowing trumscheits.

Performance
The band is especially inventive when it comes to their stage outfits, decorations or instruments. This time the stage was decorated with a nice big backdrop and the tentacles known from the cover artwork of ‘Schattenreiter’ adorned the sides of the stage. The show was full of energy – not only musically but also according performance and show elements. Lightshow, stage design, choreography and outfits – all were wearing costumes in black and silver with a tentacle-like decoration as well as silver paint in their faces – are perfectly elaborated. Singer Teufel is a live wire and runs constantly across the stage. Even though he didn’t speak much to the audience he always gained for interaction with the people. The enthusiasm of the band quickly jumped over to the audience. Anyone was dancing, jumping, singing and clapping. After about 100 minutes anyone left happy after an appreciated concert.
