Toy Dolls and Spitting off Tall Buildings

I think I haven’t listened to the Toy Dolls in more than 10 years. Curious about that what these “old men” would show I droved to the Garage in Saarbrücken. The Toy Dolls where supported on this tour by “Spitting of Tall Buildings”, a young punk band from Berlin.

Spitting of tall buildings

2 Guitars, 1 Bass, 1 Drum set and a female singer = uncompromising German punk music. Arranged about their female singer Bonnie Riot, a mixture of Bonny Tyler, Cyndie Lauper and Nena, there are Ulli on the drum set, Paule and Greg on the Guitars and Andre on the Bass. Their first cd with 6 tracks is available at their website.

Music
Really hard drum and bass, an excellent singer, nothing really new in the punk genre. But solid handcraft, well presented! Fast guitar riffs, uncompromising drum beats and the screaming & singing of Bonnie Riot. The sound at the Garage was loud and dry. The man on the mixing desk had good control of the sound, which could satisfy whole of the time

Performance
The band has found a real front woman in Bonnie Riot, on one side seesawing quiet, on the other side running and jumping, banging her head, singing and screaming. All the other musicians left a good impression as well. At the beginning the whole audience was standing hesitantly in the background. But after increasing requests by Bonnie and the performance on the stage, most people approached the stage. Bonnie and the rest of the band where jumping around euphorically. Bonnie inspired the guests, running around through the audience with the mic in her hand.  An energetic and speed loaded show which was amusing and wakes appetite for more of this band!

Toy Dolls

The Toy Dolls…what could I say about this band… A band with more than 26 years of band history, countless cd´s, singles and samplers. A band who wrote punk history with songs like ‘Nelly the elephant’. They brought the new CD “our last album” with them and they are supposed to do their last tour. But I think it will be just the first part of the “last tour”.

Music
I think I don’t have to use any words about the Toy Dolls music style. Fast fun punk , which makes you want to sing and party like nothing else. Underneath the songs of the new album, there where some excursions to their classics. A sound which inspired; clear guitars, clean drums and basses and well mixed vocals.

Performance
I was totally stunned by the performance of the Toy Dolls. Those who expected old men comfy playing their guitars where proven wrong. With a loud bang bass player Tom Goober was jumping out of a wooden box, with the sign “Our last tour”. When Olga and Dave the Nut were entering stage, the show began! From the first minute these two guys were running around all over the stage. After a very short time they threw away their wet shirts, presenting their well grown bellies and were rocking like hell.  They entertained the well attended Garage with synchronic jumping, running and laughing. The audience was really singing every song ,even the new ones. Sitting on bar stools the band played some classic songs like ‘Toccata’ (from Johann Sebastian Bach) and others.. But the absolute highlight for the enthusiastic audience was “Nelly the elephant” which couldn’t be absent on any concert of the Toy Dolls.
